Grain bin entry is one of the most dangerous tasks on the farm. The safest approach is to follow best practices that eliminate the need to enter the bin whenever possible. If entry is unavoidable, take these steps to help reduce risk:

1. Monitor air quality: Ensure oxygen levels are at least 19.5% and ventilate the bin if needed.

2. Check for spoilage: Look for crusting, damp spots, musty or sour odors, or rising CO₂ levels that signal increased hazards.

3. Shut down equipment: Turn off and lock out unloading systems to prevent accidental startup while someone is inside.

4. Wear a body harness: Equip every person entering the bin with a full-body harness and secure tie-off.

5. Avoid unstable grain: Stay off bridged grain, clumped vertical accumulations on bin walls, and never walk down grain.

6. Work with a partner: Have a trained attendant outside who can call for help in an emergency.
