Many of you have probably heard that my dear Becky went to be with The Lord on late on December 23rd. There is no way words can express my deep love and appreciation for all the, notes, wonderful words and other expressions of love and support from so, so many people since Becky was diagnoses more than four years ago. But please know that I will never forget you for it. Her eulogy may be found on the Sullivan King Mortuary website. The beautiful Witness To the Resurrection, as we Presbyterians call the Memorial Service, was beautiful. It was everything she would have wanted it to be. As it should be. She, not surprisingly, literally planned the whole thing. For those interested, this may be viewed on the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson, SC web site or their Youtube channel.
As was brought out over and over in the service, Becky was determined to live life to its fullest every day. She always believed and had total certainty that her plans, whether it was two weeks at Pawley’s Island or a family trip all the way to Turks and Caicos, would always work out. And, of course, it did. She was a determined, unstoppable force of nature.
I hope I never hear anyone use the phrase; Becky lost her battle with cancer. Becky did NOT lose the battle with cancer. Cancer not only attacks the body. It tries to take the spirit, the heart, the very soul of its victims. Well, it picked the wrong woman with Becky. Becky’s spirit, heart and soul grew stronger and more secure through the process. Anyone who knows Becky knows it is never about her.
Becky loved boas. Any event was worthy one. On one of our many trips to Café and Then Some in Greenville Becky was sporting her favorite black feather boa. At some point in the very middle of the room there was a commotion. As it turned out a young man had proposed to his girlfriend, and she joyfully said yes. Without a hesitation Becky was on the move. She went and gave the bride to be a big hug and wrapped the boa around her neck and took a selfie with her. As Becky started to leave the girl took the boas off and went to return it. To which Becky responded “Oh no! You simply MUST have the boa” …. SPIRIT
Our wedding anniversary is April 28 which is prime high school prom season. We were at a nice restaurant in Greenville and at a table nearby was a young couple, obviously having a special dinner before their prom. Becky smiled as we watched them hold hands and pray before their meal. As they shared the least expensive dessert Becky called our server over and told her to put their meal on our tab. When asked what to tell them Becky said say God Bless You… HEART
Before leaving for Emory for her first major cancer surgery, sick and tired from chemo; nervous, even a bit frightened, not sure if she was coming home or not, she sent me to the store to buy ingredients for a peach pie. That morning she made a fresh peach pie. On our way to Atlanta, we stopped by a friends house home, who was also battling cancer to deliver the pie. Then went straight to Emory for surgery… SOUL
Cancer took her body, but it never took her. Becky will live on forever.
