Recover Alaska is a multi-sector action group working to reduce the harm caused by excessive alcohol

06/15/2026

Hello community! Recover Alaska is excited to lift up a unique community event coming up this August!

The Q***r Alaska Fellowship of AA will be hosting the first ever, Q***r AF Recovery Retreat! The retreat will be at Camp K on Kenai Lake, August 21st, 22nd and 23rd. This retreat welcomes 18+ folks of all genders and identities who self describes as “in recovery” from a drug or alcohol. While this is a q***r retreat that aims to help LGBTQIA2S+ folks celebrate our q***rness and support one another in our recovery journeys, no one will be turned away, allies are welcome. There will be speakers from a number of 12 step recovery programs and lots of fun activities! There will be crafts, outdoor activities, a sauna and lake time with our very own lifeguard!

This event is being hosted Q***r Ideas of Fun, the only LGBTQIA2S+ AA meeting in Anchorage. While this event is oriented around the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, we are a group of q***r people that welcome all programs of recovery. Attendees do not need to regularly attend 12 step groups to enjoy the retreat. We hope to foster an experience in which attendees have the opportunity to connect with q***r people and allies in recovery for the goal of mutual aid. This retreat will be charging $150 in tuition, but some need based scholarships are available. We want all those who are interested in attending to have the opportunity to participate, wherever possible.

At Recover Alaska, we know that supporting wellness starts from within.

That's why we dedicate time each quarter for a staff wellness day. It's a chance to step away from our desks, connect with one another, and focus on our own wellbeing. Over the years, we've enjoyed everything from sound baths and chair yoga to escape rooms, group crafts, wellness gifts, and shared meals. These moments remind us that wellness isn't just about physical health, it's about connection, balance, and taking time to recharge.

As we recognize National Employee Wellness Month, we're reflecting on the importance of creating workplaces where people feel supported, valued, and encouraged to care for themselves and each other.

Healthy teams build healthier communities, and we're grateful to work alongside people who are passionate about making Alaska a safer, healthier place for everyone.

Men’s Health Week is a reminder that strength includes asking for support. Too often, conversations around stress, mental health, and harms of alcohol are avoided, but connection saves lives.

Checking in with a friend, talking openly, or reaching out for help can be one of the strongest things someone does.

Support starts with conversation. For inspiration, listen to the stories of our male Sober Heroes.

🧠 Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

Our brains carry us through every stage of life and protecting brain health matters. Research shows excessive alcohol use can increase risks for memory problems, cognitive decline, and long-term brain health challenges.

This month is a reminder that prevention, early support, and access to resources can have lasting benefits for individuals, families, and communities across Alaska.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and authenticity of LGBTQ+ Alaskans. Everyone deserves access to safe spaces, supportive communities, and mental wellness resources free from stigma. Connection and acceptance are powerful protective factors that reduce harms of alcohol use and isolation.

Connection was at the center of it all. 🧡

Recover Alaska team members Sara and Kara spent time this month connecting with attendees at our booth during the Pathways to Recovery Conference and sharing resources from the Choose Connection campaign.

Every conversation matters. Every connection matters. And together, we can help create communities where people feel supported, seen, and less alone.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and learn more about building connection across Alaska.
