The pump is the heart of the machine. A gear pump is the older, simpler design — it runs at one constant speed, full power all the time. That means it uses more fuel, runs hotter, and doesn't react as smoothly when you move the controls.
A variable speed pump — sometimes called a load-sensing or variable displacement pump — is smarter. It only works as hard as you need it to, so the machine feels smoother, more precise, uses less fuel, and doesn't overheat as fast. Most serious operators prefer variable speed because it's more comfortable to run all day.
Pilot controls are about how you actually drive the machine. Without them you have mechanical levers connected by cables or rods — they're stiffer and less precise. With pilot controls, you're moving small joysticks that send hydraulic signals to the valves, so the controls feel light, smooth, and very responsive — like modern car steering versus old-school truck steering.
Bottom line: get the variable speed pump and pilot controls if you're planning to run this thing more than a few hours a day. The difference in comfort and control is night and day."
