Last week, we welcomed middle school students from Hawaiʻi to the University of Alaska Anchorage campus for the ANSEP Middle School Academy (MSA)! On Friday, the students shared a cultural presentation featuring traditional Hawaiian chants and hula. Their performances included:

• He Mele Lei no Kamakau (opening chant)
• Haʻale la Wai (hula noho performed with river stones)
• Hanohano Waimānalo (oli chant)
• He Mele no ʻo Waimānalo (hula)

The College Gate Yup’ik Immersion Yuraq Group (K-5) also performed, creating a beautiful cultural exchange between the Hawaiʻi students attending ANSEP MSA and local Alaska students.

Thank you to the students for sharing their performances with the ANSEP community. Experiences like these provide meaningful opportunities to learn from one another and celebrate Indigenous cultures. Quyana to our Hawaiʻi students and educators, as well as the College Gate Yup’ik Immersion Yuraq Group, for making this ANSEP MSA such a memorable experience!
