Head Consul Kiyohiko Hamada met on October 9, 2025, with Glenfarne Alaska LNG President Adam Prestidge and representatives from 8 Star Alaska to discuss progress on the Alaska LNG Project (AKLNG) and opportunities for renewed Japan–Alaska collaboration.
The meeting reaffirmed the historic 50-year Japan-Alaska energy partnership that began with the Kenai LNG plant, while noting strong new interest from Japanese energy firms following JERA’s recent letter of intent. Mr. Prestidge shared that construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with full operation by mid-2029.
The Consular Office also invited Glenfarne and 8 Star Alaska to join its upcoming event, Online Arctic Symposium in January 2026, continuing dialogue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in energy and beyond.

On May 19th, 2025, Head Consul Kiyohiko Hamada met with Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District’s Executive Director Cassidi Cameron and Program Manager Caitlin Coreson to discuss economic conditions on the Kenai Peninsula.
Discussions touched on various subjects: AKLNG and its impact on the Peninsula’s economy, various other energy projects and their potential impacts, and sector overviews of Kenai’s tourism, mariculture, and entrepreneurial workforce trends.
Kenai Peninsula encompasses a broad range of communities home to over 60,000 individuals and is home to 3 communities that share a Sister City relationship with counterparts in Japan. It also was home to the early LNG export facilities that shipped Cook Inlet natural gas to Japan from 1969 to 2011.
The Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage looks forward to the development of economic opportunities that will deepen the ties between Japan and Alaska.
