We've become so worried about teachers being "too strict" that we've forgotten what actually makes a classroom work.

Clear expectations. Consistent boundaries. Consequences when rules are broken. Students understanding that instructions aren't always up for debate.

None of those things make a teacher unreasonable.

A classroom is a shared learning environment. One teacher may be responsible for 25 or 30 students at the same time, and every interruption, late arrival, phone distraction, argument over an instruction, or ignored rule takes something away from everyone else.

And when teachers feel they can't enforce boundaries because they might be accused of being too strict, the problem doesn't disappear.

The boundary does.

Then teachers are left trying to maintain order without the authority to consistently address the things disrupting it.

Being strict and being unfair are not the same thing.

Students deserve kindness, understanding, patience, and support. But they also need boundaries, expectations, accountability, and adults who are willing to say no when necessary.

Maybe the question shouldn't always be whether a teacher is being too strict.

Maybe we should also be asking what happens to a classroom when nobody is allowed to be strict enough.

Has education gone soft, and have we become too afraid of “strict” teachers?
