What makes the Mead stick? Take a look at what the people that make up our amazing community have to say. And if you want to hear directly from our community members, take a peek at our feed and our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ reels series.
Do you have a Mead memory or experience you want to share with us? Drop it in the comments below!
Museums aren’t just for still observation. They are spaces for movement and creativity.
We’re closing our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series with a truly remarkable class: Professor Angelica Monteiro’s Embodied Storytelling, where students put together a dance showcase with choreographies inspired by art on view at the museum.
Meet these young dancers and learn how the Mead has become a place for artistic expression and belonging for them.
Who said it’s only Art History majors that can benefit from a museum on campus? As you’ll learn in this episode of our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series, there’s so much a pre-med student (and students in all other fields!) can learn from spending some time with the Mead’s collection.
Take a peep at a lesser-known area of the Mead, and discover what goes on below the galleries.
Classes might be officially over at Amherst College, but that doesn’t stop us from looking back at some of our favorite class sessions: the ones taking place at the Mead!
For this episode of our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series, we’re staying in the William Green Study Room, where Professor Laure Katsaros is supervising students preparing for their final, which took the form of a pop-up exhibition here at the Mead.
Meet Isabelle, one of our Student Museum Educators, or SMEs. Isabelle is the latest feature from our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series.
While sitting in one of the lounges in the “Kwame Brathwaite: Revolutionary Movements” exhibition (on view now!), Isabelle speaks about why being a SME has been a highlight of her experience at Amherst.

Congratulations to recent Amherst College graduate Rachel De La Cruz, who was awarded the annual Wise Prize for Studio Art, which is judged by Mead curatorial staff. Rachel’s work, “Untitled,” was selected for its conceptual and technical cohesion, as well as for the successful integration of paper casting, drawing, and collage.
Rachel’s artist statement:
I was barely a year old when my parents and I immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 2003. I have no memory of life on the island.
Although I have returned to the Dominican Republic several times throughout my life, my understanding of the culture has largely come from interactions with my parents and family.
The language, mythology, and traditions that I inherited from my parents are frozen at the moment of our departure. Culture can change over time, but my parents have handed me a fossil. Sediments of our collective family history that have gradually solidified into rock form. I have created a visual representation of this fossil, engaging with my culture as a paleontologist might—excavating, preserving, and interpreting.
Another day, another Mead community member to spotlight! Actually, make that community memberS, since today we’re taking you to the William Green Study Room of the museum, where a class is taking place.
You will meet Joshua Guilford who teaches a class titled “Ecomedia,” about the relationship between media forms and the environment, and some of the students participating in his class.
Welcome back to our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series!
Today, we’re traveling through the galleries of the museum, where Fran, one of our Student Museum Educators (SMEs), is carrying out a “Deep Dive” – a 1-hour-long interactive lesson about a work of art currently on view.
Take a moment to listen to what Fran has to say about the way his experience as a SME helped him shape his future career.
Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’!
In this new series of reels, we’re introducing you to the people that make the Mead, the Mead. We will travel through different areas of the museum as we highlight the people who make up our community, from students and professors to visitors and staff.
We’re starting off strong with the people who welcome you whenever you visit the Mead: our lobby attendants.

We were so thrilled to participate in Mass Kids Lit Fest again this year with our buds at Jones Library and Rachel C. Katz, author of “Rise Up!: Powerful Protests in American History” (illustrated by Sophie Bass).
Rachel led assembled kids and families through dreaming up and crafting signs for issues they’re passionate about. Thank you, Rachel, and a big thanks to everyone at Mass Kids Lit Fest and the Mass Center for the Book ( ). Today is the last day of the festival, so families — there’s still time to get out there and read together!
