Today's Farm Items

1. Plant carolina (yellow) tomatoes in the last 13 spaces in row 53 , while doing so also pull w**ds between 53 and 52. Bring some staples and try to move the black w**d cover of the aisle closer to the tomato row to eliminate the 3" gap of bare soil already hosting 16" high lambsquarters w**ds.
Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) is a fast-growing herbaceous annual. It’s native to Europe and eastern Asia but has naturalized worldwide. Lamsquarters has several other common names, including fat-hen, melde, white goosefoot, goosefoot, and wild spinach. In some areas, Lambsquarters is extensively cultivated as a food crop, namely India where it...

2. Add sand bags to the watermelon row in case we do get the thunderstorm , (thunder last night)

3. The "new " farmall was dead , not even a needle stirred. Jason's guages led him to the starter motor. Bob had taught us to tap it a few times with a hammer -- it worked.

Bob ,later, looked it up and noted that it has replaceable brushes and other internal parts. Items like this will be put off till fall. I would like to get them ordered now so we will be prepared.

At the market yesterday I was ok'd to bring the tractor with the short trailer and park it on the grass as a photo op. This will make selling watermelons a breeze (later in the summer). We pull the trailer to the melon row , fill it up and drive directly to the market... no further handling . Now , I will look for a little cart for getting the chosen melon to the buyer's car. I am reminded of the fellow who loaded my car recently at the deerfield fertilizer (Nutrien) location; he carried two 50lb bags in his arms without a thought. Not I.

4. The market yesterday was great : $1018 .. we had flowers. lettuce, spinach, kale, scallions, starts, basil pots, red and yellow beets, chard, fennel, small cabbages, broccoli . We had a lot of help,

good weather, hellos to old customers. Last year it was in the $500 range and was raining.

5. Shuguang came to the farm last night and "wove " the upper field tomatoes. They will be "woved" at 8" intervals till we run out of take height. ( if they touch the ground they probably won't sell)

spotty tomatoes are a nono or a "sauce tomato"

My phone was not charged so I missed those calls and took no shots.

Weather is normal. glad we have done most of the start-planting. .. I will direct seed a couple of rows of beans. But most of the morning will be harvesting and packing for Tomorrow's Market
The yellow van will not be loaded during the day due to the heat. Tomorrow at 430 am I will making a couple of trips back and forth to the market as I load and unload it.

Farm Notes

1. We will have red and yellow beets with leaves, mixed lettuce, fennel with tops , kohlrabi without tops, personal size cabbage, a lot of Kale, radishes from row 90 cherry ,pick them, leaves on? ,
basil flats, spinach (last call on the spring spinach) Cilantro in row 35, swiss chard from row 16 . No rhubarb will be picked. We will have flowers too.
Please use clippers to harvest the fennel and kohlrabi so you do not damage the show with your too tight clutch. A clean cut sells too.

2. I seeded scallions for August in the green house.Let's try direct seeding some too in the end of row 35 . putting a pinch in holes made with my finger in the black plastic.

3. Karen, Naomi and I seeded the entire length of row 59 (250 feet) to okra by pushing one seed ,every 9" ,with a thumb thru the pastic an inch or two into the ground. Hope it works as well as it did last year when Iman did it all herself.

4. Jason will set up the farmall to hill the potatoes with a disk. One side at a time or both sides at once if he can set that up for the slope.

5. Jesse will do some mowing with the Deere, we won't be able to see the wind blowing till it grows that high again.

6. Because showers are predicted on Sunday I plan to call for a burn permit and not worry about the fire spreading ..I will call for that on Sunday 8 am.

7. water the 70's rows in the swimming pool field ( we don't have one but it sounds cool)

8.Pull w**ds from around the berry bushes in rows 98 and 97 .

9. Next week lets spread bark mulch at the muddy south end of the upper field rows. Use the pile at the foot of Brigham Lane.

Farm Notes:

1. Transplant this afternoon after 4pm because of the heat. However , Connie will go with planting flowers before 11AM today. The flats are on the ground against the north end of the greenhouse. After 4 I will be planting more zukes at the end of a vegetable rows where there is a blank space. Some crops like the zukes are discovered by a squirrel and the whole row will disappear, so I plant them at several locations for insurance . Then how to remember where.?
2. Yesterday's distraction: Jason discovered the cap on the air cleaner had fallen off and the wire clip meant to hold it in place was missing. He made a matching clip and installed it. See photo.
3. The mower is on the Deere and the grass needs cutting ..sounds like a song I knew 50 years ago. However, we are not growing corn this year . If you can follow: no elephants drive our golf carts.
4. Today I will direct seed radishes and basil adjoining the carrot rows on the west side about row 40. The radish will be covered with white fabric for worm control. (more on that to come)
5. No wind yesterday, so we are 100% perfect with holding down the new 15' wide w**d fabric at the watermelon row. Watermelons are all planted now ... sell a flat or two of seedlings.
6. Make a sign for Amity st , " Tomato ,Melon and zuke starts" then a second line: " you cut: lettuce, spinach, kale"
7. cultivate the edge w**ds in aisle 53-54
8. We have a family of at least 5 woodchucks now under our shed. What to do? This element has to be adressed , we kill w**ds . cover our plants with protective covers , but getting rid of a little family is sad.
9. When mowing , mow the path at the base of the swimming pool that is overgrown with bamboo. Mow the chestnut field : do not wear a hat. Do not wear expensive glasses.
IMG_6432.JPG It is peony time
IMG_6431.JPG Jason counterfitted a replacement wire holder and the held it with a plastic electric wire tie... better than the original ( the electrical ties were not invented then) The plastic should not be weakened by heat since this is a combustion air filter .

Farm News and do's...
1. Continue pushing okra seeds into row 59. I did 30' last night and pushed 40 seeds in . Continue the same pattern.
2. Sharon M , pushed in about twenty row feet of Roma 2 bean seeds in the midsection of row 52...
3. Naomi, Sharon, Jason, and I set the watermelon... row 25 ...and planted yellow doll and crimson sweet plants. Irrigation was also set up and turned on to aid the plants on the perfect dry and sunny day.
4. We have a family of at least 4 chucks under our main shed. .. could be the summer's obsession.
5. All the lisianthus have been planted including a flat or two of smushed ones ( the box was delivered upside down) Connie was reimbused $500 by the grower company. If they survive , what would be the ethical thing to do ? I'm not going to think about it till I know if they will live and produce flowers.
6. Bruce Wilcox replanted sugar pumpkin seeds in the south end of row 8. ( the otherwise row of cukes). This time a full sheet of cover was placed over the planting . Now the critters won't know where the delicious pumpkin seeds were planted.

Farm Items
1. The 41 temp should delay, for a week, growth of the warm weather crops like tomatoes, peppers , eggplant, beans, basil but they will survive.

2. Today we are spreading the 16'x 225' bed for the watermelon. Red and Yellow. If the wind gets under it it would be a disaster so I am facing options like burying the edges or laying 10' to***co poles end to end along the edge of the w**d fabric. We will burn holes in a single row down the middle for the plants. we will push staples between each hole too.

3. Plant those Roma 2 beans in the blank stretch of row 52. A bag of seeds is in a golfcart .

4. We have at least three woodchucks under our shed that love broccoli. They are eating it despite the electric wire protection since I took the cover off last weekThe adjoining two rows of cauliflower and miscellaneous cabbage family crops (baby cabbage, kale, napa) are still covered. Loosen the covers which are 7' wide ( now I appreciate why so wide) so the plants can push the cover up. Everything under cover is shockingly perfect.

We have two havaheart traps in case anyone wants to learn how to set them. ( get the right bait, wear gloves to keep your smell off, tie the bait down .. inside the trap so it can't be pulled out before the door snaps shut.) . It's like learning a new trade .you don't want to know . One false move and your trap will sit there for a year. Or a squirrel will get trapped instead.

5. Plant a row of okra seeds; I think the next row to do is 59. Plant them 8" apart in a single row down the center. Push them through the plastic with your finger.

6. Bruce Wilcox will replant sugar pumpkin seeds for the third time. He will cover the entire row of seeds and staple the cover down.

IMG_6424.JPG Sugar pumpkin seeds in row 8 at the south end of a long row of cukes..a smarter critter found them so we will replant and then cover the pumpkin part of the row completely.
IMG_6420.JPG our potatos after being cultivated/hilled ( they were planted in the trench) the next hilling will be more convincing.

before the weather. It's good.

Farm items

1. the potato fields in Hadley have been hilled at least once ... maybe we can set the Farmall to spread earth back on the row rather than away.

2. Check all the w**d fabric and set as needed ( I haven't been down yet but I think we are ok on that)

3. Roll out our 16' wide w**d fabric for the watermelon row. put sand bags 8' apart along the perimeter and om a row 12" west of the center. Burn holes 4"x 4" every 24" the length of the row
Plant our yellow melons first and the crimson King melons after them Check the number of plugs of each: we need about 50 each to fill the 200+ row.

4. Hand w**d the rows 50/51 oniion seedlings while you can still pull out the w**ds and not onions too.

5. push in the Roma2 bean seeds in row 52 where there is a blank gap Plant them in two rows each seed 12" apart.

6. push in a full row of okra in the 50's field maybe it is row 59... ( the next blank row)
We had a great time seeing a yankee vs tampa bay team play in Wappinger Falls ( now a kind of bedroom community for NYC) :some residents work at home , work can also get done (uninterrupted) on the train. At least that is the reason homes cost 800,000 and up in this "village " with dutch places.
Seeing your Grandson at bat and chatting with relatives I have not in years was a great way to catch up . Unlike Ebbot's ,the seats had cushions , you need strong glasses to see the scoreboard with balls and strikes- since it is easy to forget. The pitchers have been shorn of their style by a clock (for some reason that was not hard to see). At the end of the game you join the children and take a run abount the bases. They could do this because the entire field was carpeted ( a grower here would worry about the grass ) . Base runners slid extra fast and far when stealing / that changed the game too.
IMG_6414.JPG Out of what must have been 60 vendos 4 had vegetables -- that cost 3-5x what we charge
IMG_6418.JPG
IMG_6413.JPG bags of leavs for lettuce ... no heads for sale
IMG_6408.JPG right on Rt 9D , an excellent place for the Gillen fans .Quiet is back at least there so we could talk.
Very well done... I would think it is one of the best in the world. Although the family was not clear communicating at the end of the game on Sat night,,,, we ALL got the memo and showed up here.

Raining now.

Items this weekend ( no report tomorrow )

1.hand pull w**ds in onion rows 51 and 52 perfect now .. later they will likely pull out the onion when you pull them.

2. Water the green house even if it is raining

3. Plant \two 72 flats of scallions. Put a pinch of 8 or so seeds in each plug .

4. Push roma 2 beans 2 across in the blank spot of row 52 it is about twenty feet long. Just push the bean seed down a couple of inches with your finger thru the black plastc.

5. Run the tiller along the east side of row 50 to kill the w**ds.

6. using the small trailer pull a load of bark mulch from the pile t the end of brigham lane to the very wet area at the south end of the pea trellises. We put a ball on the new farmall
Maybe it can pull the trailer.

7. w**d the berry bushes in row 95 --they are out of sight ,I know.

8. Bruce W replanted pumpkins at the south end of the cuke row . The last seeding was picked out so the new seeding is covered till the pumpkins are really on their way

9. Connie and I will be back Sunday night after we attend the Wappinger Falls baseball game where Theo Gillen is playing. His team is owned by the Tampa Bay National League organization.
Bea Ballou and Jesse Johnson have agreed to close up our Farmers' Market Stand... how good is that!

10. we will be pushing in okra seeds for an entire 50's row every 8"; just push them down a couple of inches. Any closer together and you would be making a perforated dotted line that might split apart with the wrong gust.

IMG_6407.JPG our burned open 3" hole with pumpkin seed shell left . A row of holes like this create an opportunity for a strong gust of wind to give the fabric a lift . Now we put a staple next to each hole too.
