My process is called sgrafitto, which means to scratch. Im carving through a layer of black underglaze to reveal the white clay underneath.

When I carve a lantern like this, I’m not just thinking about clay — I’m thinking about shadows.
I can never predict exactly how they’ll fall, so lighting it up is always a fun surprise — and a bit of magic.
