We took this photo this week…

Hidden within this stunning iris photograph is an incredibly rare eye cancer: iris melanoma. It’s about a ONE-in-a-MILLION risk per year in the US! 😳

Most people think of melanoma as a skin cancer, but melanoma can also develop inside the eye. In this case, the dark pigmented growth visible in the lower portion of the iris was a confirmed iris melanoma.

Iris melanoma is one of the rarest forms of eye cancer seen by eye care professionals. While most pigmented spots on the iris are harmless freckles or nevi, some require careful monitoring and specialized evaluation.

This image is a powerful reminder that comprehensive eye examinations do far more than determine whether you need glasses. Eye exams can detect sight-threatening and even life-threatening conditions that often go completely unnoticed by patients.

The human iris is already one of nature’s most incredible works of art. In this case, it also tells an important medical story.
