After 18 years of HERS Rating and supporting Phius Verification in Massachusetts, Advanced Building Analysis, LLC has exciting news to share and much thanks to give to all of our clients and our ABA team and everyone who has supported us over the years.
ABA has assigned all of its multi-family Phius Verification work to RDH Building Science (Building Enclosure, Engineering & Consulting Services – RDH | Making Buildings Better™,) and assigned all of our other HERS Rating work to the most capable care of Home Energy Raters (HERS Ratings | Building Performance Testing | Home Energy Raters.)
This was not a decision made lightly. Gail and I felt we needed to do this to best support ABA's growing client base. We came to this decision only after considering many different options to best support overall growth in HERS Ratings plus particularly fast growth anticipated in Phius Passive Building Verification and large building air leakage testing.
Half of our team has joined Home Energy Raters where Gail is currently deeply involved in this transition. Home Energy Raters is the largest HERS Rating Company in Massachusetts and is most able to absorb our HERS Rating clients and continue to help them achieve their HERS Rating performance goals.
Meanwhile, I am excited to join RDH to lead a team whose primary job will be Phius Passive Building Verification. Matt Nardone from ABA has also joined RDH to continue serving our Phius Verification clients.
At RDH, we will happily continue to support all of the Phius Verification projects that have been transferred from ABA, as we continue to expand and support Phius Verification and large building air tightness testing in Massachusetts and beyond.
For Gail and I, ABA was a deep commitment and a very important part of our lives. We greatly appreciate everyone who was involved with ABA over the years.
We wish you all a meaningful and fulfilling 2026!

The next big opportunity in Home Energy Rating is accounting for embodied carbon as part of the HERS Rating process. Here's the latest RESNET Podcast in which we discuss why and how we should do this.
RESTalk: EP94 Learn more about embodied carbon in housing with Andy Buccino, Sara DeVico, and Mike Browne “Science does not know its debt to imagination. “ -Ralph Waldo Emerson More and more we hear of the impact of carbon on our society and environment. Recent data says that operational carbon (the carbon that comes from energy, heat, lighting, etc. ) is becoming less of a factor. Now....

In Remembrance of Dan Clark
We have very sad news to share. Dan Clark passed away on Sunday April 3, 2022.
He unexpectedly had a massive heart attack early last Tuesday Morning and in spite of the best efforts he never recovered.
He died surrounded by his wife and daughter, and with friends far and wide taking time to remember him. Friends sang for him "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," one of his favorite songs.
We who knew him well are all heartbroken.
For over 11 years as a HERS Rater, Dan was a colleague, mentor, and friend. He was calm, wise, and compassionate.
He had the highest ideals, and he followed through on them. He communicated his ideals and his knowledge with patience and sensitivity. He was a consummate teacher.
Together, we had many good times, and we accomplished much meaningful work - right up until his last day.
He was 69. His life was an example for us all.
Please take a moment to reflect and remember Dan.

Not all builders understand the true value of working with a certified home energy rater. Educate builders about the benefits of working with a rater with APA’s guide, The Performance Path to Energy Code Compliance. Available as a FREE download, The Performance Path provides builders with visual examples and an overview of performance path options, the benefits of choosing a performance path to meet IECC requirements and the advantages of working with a certified energy rater.
With this brochure, inform builders about:
· How performance paths cut construction costs and provide greater design flexibility.
· The relative energy efficiency impacts of common assemblies and systems.
· How energy raters help builders choose cost-effective alternatives to meet IECC requirements.
· How a performance path allows builders to maintain their preferred building specifications.
· Performance path tradeoff options and their estimated energy use impacts.
· The energy modeling process and how the HERS and ERI ratings are calculated.
· The importance of building an energy-efficient home.
· And more!
– The Engineered Wood Association offers this and many other resources to share with builders and clientele.

We are thrilled to help our clients pursue "energy positive" building performance - meaning their buildings produce more energy than they consume on an annual basis. This can be cost-effective when this is a central part of the design criteria, and it can be done even with large multi-family projects in urban areas. The DOE Zero Energy Ready Home program is a great basis for achieving this.
