Iowa lost an outstanding advocate for agriculture, a genuine leader and good friend of mine, Bill Northey. I had the privilege of working directly for Under Secretary Northey while at USDA. He will be missed by many. Prayers to the Northey family. 🙏

Happy Independence Day! For the past several years, I begin each July 4th by taking a few moments and reading the Declaration of Independence. Even though I've read the Declaration several times now, each reading provides me with a new perspective, thought or understanding of why our Country's Founders determined it was necessary to break-away from England. The risk and sacrifice each of those men made was considered treasonous by England; and I often reflect upon the emotions that each Founder who signed their name to the Declaration was experiencing during that time in 1776. The decision to issue the Declaration of Independence was likely one of the most consequential decisions of each of their lives--but they did so knowing that they were determined to build a better, stronger Country where life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were cherished and recognized to be absolute. And so on this, the 246th Birthday of America, I hope you each take a moment to read and reflect upon the Declaration of Independence and have a great Independence Day!
