Choice Medical, LLC was established in May of 2002 by Kevin Henning. With over thirty years of experience in the Durable Medical Industry, Kevin found a great opportunity to start his own business. After receiving his biomedical electronics degree (AAS), Henning started his career with Miller Medical Service in Waterloo. A few years later, Kevin came to Ames to pursue his electronic engineering degree at Iowa State University (BSEE). While a student, he worked part-time for Excel Medical (a former medical equipment business in Ames). With the departure of Excel Medical from the Ames market, an opportunity was realized for Kevin. Today, Choice Medical, LLC has received much support from the local medical clinics, doctors and many customers. All are pleased to see what we have to offer. With high quality service and products, Choice Medical is committed to providing independence and freedom to meet their customers' medical needs as a one-stop shop. Choice Medical completed their triennial survey for accreditation on November 19th, 2020. The survey was completed by HQAA and we received one of the highest scores ever given to a company! We pride ourselves on offering the best customer service and a wide variety of durable medical equipment. Choice Medical strives to continue providing the very best customer service to existing customers as well as new ones.
Over the years, I know Choice Medical has received some negative reviews, and I want to speak openly and honestly about that. Transparency matters to me.
One thing people should know about me is that I will always advocate for my patients. Their care comes first, and I will fight with insurance companies every step of the way when it comes to getting people the equipment and services they need.
Unfortunately, as a medical equipment company, we are required to follow the rules and coverage guidelines set by insurance companies. Many of the difficult conversations we have are not because we don’t care, but because insurance has denied coverage or a patient does not meet the criteria established by their policy.
Those conversations are hard. They are never conversations I want to have, but they are conversations I have to have honestly and professionally. Part of my responsibility is educating patients and families on how insurance coverage works, even when the answer is frustrating or disappointing.
What many people don’t see is the amount of time spent advocating behind the scenes — appeals, phone calls, documentation requests, fighting denials, and trying to get exceptions approved. Insurance companies are often extremely difficult to work with, and many times there is little room for compromise, even when we strongly believe someone would benefit from the equipment.
I have been in the DME industry for over 19 years and in healthcare since I was 14 years old. Compassion, empathy, and caring for people are at the core of who I am and who we are at Choice Medical.
I also believe reviews matter. I personally read reviews before choosing businesses myself, and I understand why others do too.
So today, I’m asking for something simple and honest from our community:

Choice Medical LLC has received a notice from United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Program and unfortunately, UHC is going to transfer their care in Iowa to Synapse Health.
As of April 1st, 2026 we will no longer be able to provide any services to anyone that has a United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Program.
