Alert: Sumter County

A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of western Macon, Marion, eastern Stewart, Webster, Schley, northwestern Sumter and southwestern Taylor Counties through 700 PM EDT

At 632 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was near Doyle, or near Buena
Vista, moving east at 40 mph.

HAZARD...40 to 50 mph wind, frequent cloud to ground lightning and
heavy rain.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of
light, unsecured objects. Heavy rain may cause temporary
street flooding especially in poor drainage areas.

Locations impacted include...
Americus, Buena Vista, Ellaville, Preston, Richland, Plains, Ideal,
Weston, Putnam, Brantley, Seminole, Murrays Crossroads, Rupert, La
Crosse, Zellobee, Friendship, Tazewell, Doyle, Bumphead, and Walls
Crossing.
People outdoors should seek shelter immediately. If you can hear
thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Motorists
should slow down and be prepared for possible loss of control due to
hydroplaning.

Warm temperatures with a chance for scattered showers and storms are expected this afternoon across portions of southern and central GA, with highs near 90. Drier conditions are forecast across north GA, where highs will reach the mid to upper 80s.

At 616 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was over Friendship, or 8 miles
southwest of Ellaville, moving east at 40 mph.

HAZARD...40 to 50 mph wind, frequent cloud to ground lightning and
heavy rain.

At 434 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was over New Era, or near
Americus, moving east at 15 mph.

HAZARD...Up to 40 mph wind, frequent cloud to ground lightning and
heavy rain.

Please use caution if you must travel today. We are currently receiving reports of water over roadways at various locations throughout the county, and units are responding to assess conditions.

We are also continuing to work multiple reports of trees down across the county and are removing them as quickly as possible. Please avoid driving through flooded roadways and use extra caution when encountering emergency crews working in the area.

We appreciate your patience and will provide additional updates as conditions change.

UPDATE: McMath Mill Road should be open shortly. Sumter County Public Works, along with Sumter County Fire Rescue, have removed the trees from the roadway.

Please continue to use caution when traveling in this area. Power crews remain on scene and are expected to be working for several more hours repairing downed power poles and electrical lines.
