Oh, how I loved this sensitive and thoughtful conversation with my friend Tim Dillinger of God's Music Is My Life about Rich Mullins’ philosophy of living as expressed through his music and writings. As well as some thoughts on the history of the artistry of Gospel music, and why it’s changed.
Watch or listen on Substack Live below.
The Rich Mullins Philosophy A recording from Andrew Greer's live video
“There is no longer Jew or Greek; there is no longer slave or free; there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise …” — from Galatians 3:28-29

Rich Mullins sure had a lot to say. And that lot to say is what drew me in. The direct nature in which he expressed his thoughts and his convictions. You didn’t have to agree with him to understand what he meant by what he said. And that clarity, that forthrightness, drew a lot of people in. Here are some of my own things to say about Rich, and about being clear. Read on my Substack at the link below.

It’s hot. But they’re holding up. Always love having Mom and Dad at home here in Plains. ❤️
There is no world in which I would sing a country song in public except at Zach and Leila’s wedding. How’s my Rascal Flatts vibe?
A conversation with Andrew Osenga asking the question, “Why do we sing the songs we sing?” This is us simply thinking through singing patriotic songs within the context of a church service. What do you think?

I love Jennifer Taylor at East Wing Magazine. She is an astute interviewer, a good writer, and a sound journalist. Grateful to her for taking the time to talk to Kim Fuller and me about the deep faith of Rosalynn Carter, and the Sunday school lessons famously taught in Washington, D.C. and Plains, Georgia by Jimmy Carter. Read the article below.
The Wisdom of Jimmy, the Presence of Rosalynn How the famed Sunday gatherings in Plains, Georgia, became a testament to an inseparable marriage–time and again.
A world with space for Rich Mullins songs is a world with space for all the seekers, all the doubters, all the wanderers, all the, yes, ragamuffins. And so Brandon Heath, Bonnie Keen and I were honored to find some hallowed space within the halls of Rich’s old homestead in Tennessee to explore one of his songs in the vulnerable lay-it-all-on-the-floor, straight-to-tape fashion that has become these Bellsburg records tributing Rich. How I got all mixed up in helping to produce and record these gems, that’s its own story in space and time.
For today, you can listen to “Hope to Carry On”—the next single from “Back to Bellsburg: The Songs of Rich Mullins,” out this fall on Old Bear Records. Listen here: https://found.ee/HopeToCarryOn

Earlier this week, I spent a good bit of time with parents who lost their twenty-one year old son nearly six years ago. In what would become his last days, he was in the ICU. This was during the early days of the pandemic. His parents weren’t allowed in the room. His mother wasn’t allowed in the room. I remember her saying, “He needed his mom. He needed to hear my voice, to feel my hand in his, to sense my presence.”
I started thinking about my mother. All the comfort she has provided me throughout my life, just by instinct. And it caused me to reflect on how many women have been the ministry of God in my life. Yes, men, too. But for today I’m talking about women and their leadership in our spiritual lives. On this week’s Substack. Read below.

This is the sunset over Oklahoma City tonight. I’m filming more of the next documentary, at this high school, with a family who lost their son unexpectedly almost six years ago. He was the quarterback on the football team here. That’s a big deal at a big school (6A) in these parts. But his character ran deep. With humility. With service. And there’s a lot of wondering why. I’m here just to hear them work it out. With trembling and fear. To question when it’s so far above our paygrade. The answers to the doubts that foundation our lives are so few. These sunsets, these created orders, help me trust that somewhere down the road we’ll find some answers.
