Does your child say “back-yoom” instead of “vacuum?” Keeping the lips closed will make the V sound like B. The trick is to keep a relaxed mouth, slightly open, and let out the air like you’re humming. Your front teeth should slightly touch your lower lip!

Does your child say “wed” instead of “red?” Sometimes the difference between a correct and incorrect production is as simple as adjusting mouth shape.
One of the most common R errors is a W substitution. When we produce the “w” sound, our lips are round, like an O. If a child is producing R with round lips, it’s likely it could come out sounding more like W!
It might not always be as easy of a fix as shown here, but practicing a “smile” mouth shape for R will help set your child up for success.

‼️In case you needed a sign…
Don’t get me wrong, I could NOT have survived the newborn phase without a binky. Pacifiers are great soothers…but extended binky use can result in dental issues, oral motor deficits, and speech difficulties.
A good rule of thumb is to begin weaning your baby off the binky once they start cutting teeth, and aim to be completely binky free around 12 months.
But seriously the level of excitement when I hear parents modeling language for their children in public… 🫣🥰👀
Learning new words develops through repetition, experience, and connection, not ✨just✨ imitation. It’s best to avoid using “say ___” to prompt a word and instead just model it in a real-life, natural way!
Oh bud, let’s stop doing that, kay?

3 things I’m doing MORE of this summer to prioritize my children’s speech and language development:
🗣️More conversations -> builds turn-taking skills & connection
📖More reading -> introduces new words & language structures
🧸More play-> models language in natural and fun settings
More conversation + more reading + more play = more language growth. Follow me for tips about how to support your child’s language in these ways using what you’re ALREADY doing!
TLDR: “L” errors in young children are a typical part of development. For those older kiddos with “L” errors, try
1. Tongue tip behind top front teeth
2. Tall tongue
3. Back of tongue down
