Satan does not want you to read this book. Especially if you have young children.
That about sums up my feelings on this.
I heard about For the Children's Sake from a talking head on YouTube, and after I started reading it, another talking head said the author wrote it only after reading Charlotte Mason's first book. Charlotte Mason apparently wrote six. But just this one book is a wealth of information, not just on homeschooling but parenting and life!
I think my greatest takeaway is something I've been ruminating on since I listened to that second talking head speak on it. That is: having a strong will does not mean you're combative or that you do what you want despite the obstacles of life getting in the way. That might actually mean having a weak will. A person with a weak will is at the mercy of their passions and continuously chasing dopamine hits.
A strong will is the internal power to choose and do what is right even when it is difficult or contrary to one's immediate impulses. A strong-willed person has the fortitude and self-control to command themselves to do what is right and good even when they don't feel like it.
Mind blown! But it makes a lot of sense, especially if self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and fortitude is one of the four cardinal virtues.
She goes on to say we have to be taught what is right and good, and there are various ways we nourish our will so we can have mastery over our appetites.
I wish I had read this 27 years ago.

A Pioneer Love Story: The Letters of Minnie Hobart was fascinating. I bought it this spring from the White Deer Land Museum in Pampa where, in is heyday, Minnies husband managed. He also helped to manage the Goodnight ranch and he did so well that the Hobart family owned two large properties in the Panhandle plus Minnies childhood home in Vermont. It's funny how she described the wind. It's always windy here! It's fascinating that they also traveled to England (late in life- to settle the affairs of the late Mrs Adair). It's fascinating how much they traveled, but car and by real. I appreciate that the parents had a good relationship with their children and their grandchildren. What a neat read.

A couple of weeks ago, I listened to a talking head on YouTube say Charlotte Mason taught that students (and adults) can read a wide banquet of books slowly over a year. This is instead of reading one book from start to finish before starting another.
I feel seen!
Instead of spreading all my current reads around the house, I must stack them and keep them in one spot. I lost my Charles Goodnight biography. It's not in my van, or under the couch, or under my bed... 😭 It's just gone.
This is what I've been working on reading this summer:
1. A Pioneer Love Story (biography) by Priscilla Wilson
2. For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay
3. The Documents of Vatican 2 (it's gonna be a long while before I'm done w/ this!)

This is one of the many reasons I feel like a lot of Catholic women will like The Way Things Are.
