Why the color of St. Patrick’s Day changed from blue to green St. Patrick’s Day usually conjures images of partying, Catholicism, Irish nationalism and, perhaps most famously, the color green: green clothes, green shamrocks, green beer and green rivers. But the holiday used to be a solemn feast day when you’d be far more likely to see the color blue.

This week, Professors Halverson, Brundrett, Marriott, and Hand attended the TCCTA's 79th Annual Convention in Dallas, TX, where they attended sessions by educators from across the state of Texas to learn new tools, insights, and strategies to bring back to Alvin College.

128 years ago today, Feb. 15, 1898, an explosion sank the American battleship, U.S.S. Maine, in Cuba's Havana Harbor, killing 266 of the 354 crew members on board. Likely due to an onboard explosion, the "Yellow Press" blamed Spain, infuriating the American people, who cried, "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!" Two months later, the United States declared War on Spain, beginning what the Sec. of State, John Hay, described as a "Splendid Little War."
