Shadow has been here for 3 months now; she’s growing like a w**d and filling in too!

In June of this year (2026), I became the California Affiliate (Team Leader) for Equi-First Aid USA which began in 2007, after a group of Veterinarians and horse professionals identified the need for horse owners to have the same "first-responder skills" for their animals, as humans have for each other through their Red Cross training.

I am proud to be a team member of this organization whose instructors deliver veterinarian and equine professional designed and reviewed courses in Equine Health and Emergency First Aid.

Our courses are recognized for continuing education credits with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, EAGALA, Equestrian Canada, various state associations of veterinary technicians, and more.

We have instructors in California and throughout the United States who love to share their passion for teaching our courses with others. We also have opportunities for those with a passion for equine and teaching to join our team!

Z is well on her way to being what I hoped she’d be.

I’m thankful for the horse women in my life that have helped develop her along the way!

We did ground work extensively while she settled in and then off she went to Esther Dorr to learn steering while ground driving, loading and ponying on trails.

She went to the Larsen’s for more loading, ponying on trails, exposure to cattle as well as accepting a ba****ck rider.

While I was teaching Introduction to Livestock Health at Cuesta College I met Lou Moore Jacobson who found a spot for Z at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the c**t starting program where students start mostly performance quarter horses under-saddle. Lou found her a student who was also in the packing club, so she was also started with packing.

Z had some time off from riding while she was in foal but had extensive desensitization with me and my Equi-First Aid USA 🇺🇸 students as a volunteer “patient” during our equine emergency first aid ⛑️ clinics onsite here at Alpine Creek Ranch.

Now that her filly Indy is weaned, Z is back under-saddle and back with the Larsen’s who are helping with wet saddle pads, reminding her what steering is and how to control her body while in an arena setting as well as out in cattle pastures.

Z is now moving out through cattle pasture and seems to genuinely like it even better than arena work which is fine by me!

I appreciate the time she’s gotten and is getting in places that practice soft hands and patience to build a solid foundation!
