Jo’s attention span is longer than most adults 😅

When Jo was born, we didn’t have anything for her except for a few cloth diapers and some clothes. We decided we would meet her and see what she needs as she grows. It’s been 1.5 years and we haven’t yet seen the need to fill her environment with overstimulating toys that stunt her creativity. Jo is super resourceful and has accumulated a small collection of things she’s found around the house that she plays with daily; wooden spoons, a camp light without batteries, a broken digital camera, a scarf. These items become whatever she wants them to be, holding the spoon up to her ear like a telephone, or soaring the camp light around like a bird.

None of her toys light up, make noise, turn on, or overstimulate her little brain. Instead, they allow her imagination to take center stage. They encourage her to play which is key for her little brain to develop.

When we go to friend’s homes who don’t have kids, or out to restaurants, Josie never gets bored because she can play with anything anywhere. But can also sit still and quietly listen and observe adults in conversation without needing a screen in-front of her face to keep her calm.

She’s learned to rely on her environment for entertainment. She knows how to get any adult in the room to provide their full attention, but she can also keep herself entertained for half an hour with a napkin.

One thing that we have done since she’s little is weekly trips to the library. Jo has fallen in love with her books and looks forward to new books like candy. She can sit in a pile of books for an hour, flipping pages slowly, making animal noises, studying the pages and characters, and at this stage, very obviously making up her own stories in her head.

One day, Jo will have all the girly toys - doll houses and horseys and all the pretty dresses - but right now, in these early years, it’s so important to allow her to tap into her creativity on her own without needing a toy to tell her what game she’s playing, or a box thinking for her. 05/18/2026
