New research is exploring a fascinating connection between smell, sleep, and memory. Showing promising connections between scent, memory, and brain health in older adults.

One six-month study exposed participants to a rotating selection of rose, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, and lavender for 2 hours each night. The scent group showed significantly greater improvement on a verbal memory measure compared with the control group.

Why? Our sense of smell has a powerful connection to brain regions involved in memory and emotion.

For someone living with dementia, familiar scents such as fresh coffee, a favorite flower, baked bread, or lavender may also create moments of comfort and connection.

3 COMMON DEMENTIA TRIGGERS CAREGIVERS SHOULD KNOW

Sometimes what looks like “difficult behavior” is actually a response to something the person is experiencing.

1. Too much stimulation
Loud noises, crowded spaces, too many conversations, or sudden changes can feel overwhelming.

2. Physical discomfort
Pain, hunger, thirst, constipation, infection, poor sleep, or medication side effects can sometimes lead to sudden changes in mood or behavior.

3. Changes in routine
A new environment, unfamiliar faces, or a change in a familiar schedule can create confusion and anxiety.

A new study is drawing attention to something we may not normally connect with dementia: changes in the voice.

Researchers analyzed health data from more than 833,000 people and found that diagnosed voice disorders were associated with a higher risk of cognitive decline.

The changes can include differences in:
• Pitch
• Clarity
• Volume
• Vocal range
• Overall voice quality

Interestingly, people with a voice disorder but no hearing loss had a 58% higher risk of cognitive impairment or dementia compared with those without a voice disorder. The association was even stronger among people who had both voice and hearing problems.

But there is an important distinction:
A change in someone's voice does not mean they have dementia.
