Ren & Ink Lettering

So grateful to make art every day, that can translate to workshops at my teaching studio .co 🥰

I recently attended an event where I was amongst other artists I admire — we were all on a stage with bright lights! — and we were all asked to talk openly to the public about what art we were currently making.

I had a moment where I panicked. I knew I was technically making stuff — but it wasn’t nearly as impressive as these other artists and their gallery shows and commissions! — and I wondered if what I’m doing was good enough.

But I’m now realizing — my art is so much more than a finished work of art in a gallery. My art is personal. My art is also shared with others. My art is small, or it may sit unfinished in a sketchbook. My art is done in secret, but sometimes shared around a table. It’s just a different way to do it.

That feeling of not-good-enough may be in my head (and always there, I fear) — but what is TRUE is that my brushstrokes feel more confident, my sketching has an easier flow to it, and my art makes me SMILE. Every time.

I offer this perspective to my students. Your art isn’t always about a finished piece or the validation of others. It’s a practice, a form of showing up for yourself. It’s a gift, no matter what it looks like in the end.

Yeah, there’s a second!! You may be familiar with my Florals one, published back in 2020 and still going strong — but you may not know that I had yet another magical opportunity to collaborate with Crayola for book #2, Tropical Garden! Took an excellent virtual Dynamic Lettering workshop this past weekend by — this is one of two pieces I crafted while in class. Felt great to start with a REAL pencil and REAL paper — then I took my sketch over to to clean it up! I highly recommend all of Ken Barber’s courses, they’re packed with valuable tips to really take your lettering to the next level 👏👏👏
My phrase was chosen as an adorable way to show my reaction to the current state of our government and country 🤪🍌 We are uttering this phrase (and others) pretty much daily, it seems.

I’ll be doing a deep dive into the program, but starting at the beginning for first timers. We will work through the basics, then move on to simple floral drawings to practice our newfound skills. It’ll be relaxed learning, but with a purpose 😁💕 All you need is your iPad, Apple Pencil, and the loaded app Procreate, and I’ll do the rest!
