In OFF EDGE, the fictional main character was a figure skater and lost her gold medal immediately after competing because of suspected falsified age records related to her adoption. Figure skating has had many high-profile Olympic controversies, but none related to age.

Ever wonder where the idea of a “beach read” came from?

The tradition actually goes back more than 150 years. In the mid-19th century, as middle-class Americans began traveling to summer resorts, publishers saw an opportunity: summer was a slow season for books, so why not sell light, portable novels to vacationers?

And there’s an especially interesting story about women authors and women readers in the rise of the summer novel.

The phrase “beach read” itself came much later—around 1990.

Do you remember Elbow Room in East Dallas?

It was one of my favorite dive bars—not just because of the atmosphere, but because of a young cook named Carl, who made the best New York-style pizza in Dallas. He always seemed happiest when he was pulling pizzas out of the oven.

Elbow Room became one of the inspirations for Dark Energy. When it closed in 2017 to make way for a new dental school building, it felt like the end of an era. Two years later, Carl passed away after living with a chronic illness.

If you've read Dark Energy, you've seen the dedication to Carl. Every once in a while, I think about how the people and places we love have a way of living on in unexpected ways.

Did you have a favorite neighborhood hangout that's no longer there?

Some places become part of your story. For me, it was Elbow Room in East Dallas. It wasn’t fancy. It didn’t try to be. It was the kind of neighborhood bar where people remembered your name, and where a young cook named Carl Anthony served what I still think was the best New York-style pizza in Dallas. He always seemed happiest when he was pulling pizzas out of the oven.

The building is gone now. Carl is gone too. But both found their way into one of my novels, because writers have a habit of preserving the people and places that matter.
