Why do some offices feel draining even when they aren’t loud?
Eric explains…
“People usually think distraction comes from volume. Most of the time, it’s actually clarity.
If your brain can clearly understand conversations happening across the room, it keeps trying to process them—even when you’re focused on something else.
That’s why some offices feel mentally exhausting by the end of the day, even when nobody’s being particularly loud.”

**We can add sound masking to university libraries, group study rooms, school counseling offices, or testing centers.**
After just one interruption, people need an average of 23 minutes to fully regain focus.
Which is why a quite environment is crucial for students when they are taking tests, reading, or studying.
Sound masking addresses this issue by cutting the "radius of distraction" in half, making a conversation unintelligible at 15 feet instead of 30.

Some of the most **overheard conversations** by support staff (i.e. receptionists, custodians, security guards, administrative assistants, etc.) include conversations around…
• People complaining about the boss or other workers: 62%
• Layoffs or firing someone: 35%
• Someone’s compensation: 22%
• Romantic relationships between coworkers: 20%
• Lying to the boss: 18%
• Setting up another coworker to fail: 11%
You can’t control every conversation. But you CAN control how far it travels.

Most people think sound masking is just white noise. It's not.
White noise hits every frequency at equal energy, so when it's loud enough to actually mask conversation, it sounds like blasting AM radio static ⚡️🎙️
Sound masking is different.
It's specifically engineered to match the frequency range of human speech, so it quietly does its job without anyone noticing it's even there.
As you can see on the graph… sound masking follows the recommended spectrum while white noise only hits this area at a small frequency and amplitute convergence.

Why can't I just use a white noise machine?
"Your ears can find a white noise machine the same way they find a fan. Sound masking surrounds you completely and thus disappears into the background."
