Cherry blossom viewing season in Tokyo
From late March to early April every year, people’s enthusiasm for cherry blossoms can be seen throughout the city of Tokyo, creating an unusual atmosphere. This page will introduce you to the latest bloom forecast for 2023, as well as the best places to enjoy spring cherry blossoms.
Visitors can enjoy a dream-like experience during the cherry blossom season in Tokyo. Thousands of cherry blossom trees are in bloom together, and the entire road will be dyed in a beautiful pink cherry color. The whole country of Japan is keen on cherry blossom viewing. People will gather in parks to enjoy the flowers and have outdoor picnics to take photos. Shops sell cherry blossom-themed lunch boxes, pink cherry blossom-flavored drinks, and other products. The streets are filled with a cheerful atmosphere as if bidding farewell to the cold winter.
Best Cherry Blossom Festivals and Cherry Blossom Viewing Places in Tokyo
There are quite a variety of cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo, ranging from well-known spots to niche spots. If you want to fully experience the fun of cherry blossom viewing, you can attend celebrations and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere. The following will introduce 7 popular celebrations. You may wish to enjoy the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms with the locals and spend a pleasant time welcoming the spring.
Nakameguro Cherry Blossom Festival
The Nakameguro area has a high sense of fashion but maintains a laid-back atmosphere. There are many fashionable cafes. Every spring, the originally quiet banks of the Meguro River are transformed. Not only are rows of lanterns hung, but vendors selling drinks and snacks also gather on the site, attracting a large number of tourists and creating a lively carnival-like atmosphere. More than 800 cherry blossom trees stretching for 3.8 kilometers along the river outline an amazing pale pink arch on the river. Standing on the bridge across the river, you can also see the swaying cherry blossoms reflected on the river. As long as you come here, you can take many beautiful photos and preserve these surreal and romantic scenery.
Rikugien
There is a word in Japanese called "Yozakura". As the name suggests, it means "cherry blossoms at night". The cherry blossoms are lit up with lights to create a fairyland-like scenery. Speaking of night cherry blossoms, the most famous one is the Rikugien weeping cherry blossoms. This garden was built in 1702 by the sh**un's daimyo (vassal) Yanagisawa Yoshiho, based on the landscape sung in Japanese songs. Passing through the main entrance of the garden, a majestic and gorgeous 70-year-old weeping cherry tree comes into view. To this day, during the cherry blossom season, this weeping cherry tree still blooms with pale pink cherry blossoms, and the flower-laden branches hang down like a waterfall.
Moti Cherry Blossom Festival
Have you ever seen the beauty of cherry blossoms reflected on the water from the cherry blossom trees growing beside the moat or along the river? Do you also think that this adds a bit more beauty to the overall landscape? The Sumida River in eastern Tokyo is no exception. During the Edo period, the eighth sh**un Tokugawa Yoshimune ordered the planting of cherry blossom trees on both sides of the river, and a cherry blossom boulevard stretching about 1 kilometer from Azuma Bridge to Sakura Bridge was born. This cherry blossom boulevard has attracted countless visitors for centuries. During the festival, local community organizations, business groups, tourism associations, etc. will set up booths here, which is very lively. At night, in addition to the landscape lighting where you can enjoy the night cherry blossoms, the Tokyo Skytree will also appear in the background, further highlighting the beauty of the cherry blossoms.
Chiyoda Cherry Blossom Festival
Chidorigafuchi Greenway is located north of the Imperial Palace. It is a quiet leisure trail away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Every spring, it turns into a 700-meter-long cherry blossom tunnel. About 260 Somei Yoshino and Oshima cherry trees here are lit up at sunset. Chidorigafuchi Boating Ground will also extend its business hours during the Cherry Blossom Festival, allowing visitors to enjoy the dreamlike scenery from the water. Nearby stores and local groups also host cherry blossom-themed events, adding to the lively atmosphere of many spring celebrations.

New Shore Excursion Added
Japan Adventure Club just added a Tsuruga shore excursion in January 2023. Interested cruise passengers can request a private tour in this beautiful city. Please visit https://japanexpotours.com/tsuruga-shore-excursion to learn more.
Tsuruga Castle is the top attraction that you must see. Tsuruga Castle (鶴ヶ城, Tsurugajō) was built in 1384 and changed hands many times between the different rulers of the Aizu region. It was destroyed after the Boshin War of 1868, a rebellion against the newly formed Meiji government, which had taken over control from the Tokugawa sh**un and put an end to Japan's feudal era. Tsuruga Castle was one of the last strongholds of samurai loyal to the sh**unate.
