Receiving its name from the distinctly sweet smell of affected infants' urine, maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare, inherited condition that is usually detected in newborn screening. It is characterized by a deficiency of certain enzymes that are required to break down amino acids (protein building blocks). The inability to break down these amino acids leads to developmental delay.
