Edelen Farms is a family owned, second-generation farm that promotes healthy agriculture. As a young boy, Greg Edelen longed to be a farmer.

He went to college and graduated with a degree in Animal Science. He married Lauren and they eventually settled in Alice, Texas where they ran a business that provided the capital to purchase land in the country. In the late 1980’s
Greg began farming and sold the business in town. Their first five children grew up working with their parents. They all learned how to drive farm vehicles, use a hoe,

Let’s Talk Facts, Not Fear: If you’ve been seeing headlines about New World Screwworm, take a deep breath.

This is a serious livestock pest, but it is not a new one.
Texas ranchers dealt with screwworm for generations before it was eradicated from the United States in the 1960s. Many of our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents remember checking livestock regularly for signs of infestation. This isn’t an unknown threat—we’ve faced it before.

The recent detections are concerning because they remind us that screwworm has been slowly moving north through Central America and Mexico for years. Most Texas ranchers have known it was likely only a matter of time before it reached our borders again.

But here’s what you need to know:

✔️ This is not a mystery pest.
✔️ We know how to identify it.
✔️ We know how to fight it.
✔️ We have successfully eradicated it before.

And just as importantly:

✔️ This is not a food safety issue.
✔️ It does not affect the safety of the beef, poultry, pork, eggs, or other farm products you buy.
✔️ Consumers do not need to worry about the food supply because of New World Screwworm.

Screwworm is an animal health and livestock management issue. It affects living animals through wounds and requires ranchers to be vigilant in caring for their livestock. It is not a threat to the meat, milk, or eggs produced by healthy animals.

The media often focuses on the scariest part of the story, but fear doesn’t solve problems—knowledge does.

Texas ranchers have been talking about this possibility for awhile now. The answer isn’t panic. The answer is staying informed, monitoring livestock carefully, and supporting the proven programs that have worked before.

The goal of this post isn’t to downplay the situation. It’s to replace fear with facts. Knowledge beats panic every time.

Unfortunately, we will not be at the market tonight as planned.

It’s been pouring at the farm all afternoon, making it impossible for us to get everything loaded and ready in time. While we’re incredibly thankful for the rain, it definitely threw a wrench in today’s plans!

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Thank you for supporting local farms through all the unpredictability that comes with farming—and Texas weather! 🌱🚜

Another year of the Jim Wells County Ag Fair happened last week, and it officially solidified Alister’s current obsession with combines and every other large green piece of machinery. 🚜💚

To be fair, it’s hard not to be impressed by equipment taller than you are.

Moments like this are one reason we try not to rush out and mow every wildflower.

Those “weeds” and tiny flowers are food and shelter for pollinators like butterflies and bees — the little creatures that help gardens grow and crops produce food.

Sometimes leaving a patch of flowers untouched can make a big difference.

The farm may look a little wilder this time of year, but to us, that’s a sign of life. 🌼🐝🌾

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there — especially the ones carrying the whole crew on their backs. 🦂💛

Even in the animal world, mamas are tough, protective, hardworking, and endlessly patient.

Today we’re celebrating ALL the moms.Thank you for all you carry, even when nobody sees it.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Edelen Farms 🌾🐓

The hens rotate who gets personally tucked in at night by Alister 😂
As you can tell they’re pretty used to him taking care of them.
Also, 👀 check out all this grass. 3 inches two or so weeks ago really made a difference. It’s not enough to sustain so keep praying for rain but we sure are glad for what we got!

❓ FAQ: “Do you use hormones or antibiotics?”

Short answer: No hormones. No routine antibiotics. 👇

💊 Antibiotics: We do not use antibiotics routinely. Our animals are raised in a way that supports their health naturally through good nutrition, clean living conditions, and low-stress handling.

That said, we also believe in responsible animal care. If an animal ever NEEDS treatment to prevent suffering, we will treat it. Period.

👉 But here’s the difference: That animal would not go into our regular meat supply.

In fact, in the decades we’ve been farming, we can only remember one time needing antibiotics: a momma rabbit that came to us with a severe case of mites from where she originated. That’s it.

Our animals are raised so healthfully that, thankfully, it just hasn’t been needed.

💛 Our goal is simple: Raise healthy animals the right way from the start, so interventions are rarely needed—and you can feel confident about what you’re feeding your family.

Have more questions about how we raise our animals? Drop them below or send us a message—we’re always happy to share!
