‘Popping and Hissing’ - Flight Safety Foundation 06/11/2026

The Boeing 737-800 was 10 minutes from landing in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, when a flight attendant saw smoke and flames emerging from an overhead storage bin. When the bin was opened, the flight attendant and nearby passengers saw a burning backpack and used a fire extinguisher and water to douse the flames and eliminate the smoke. The airplane then landed without further incident at Hobart.

Aviation insurance is often seen as something that comes into play after an event.

But increasingly, it’s becoming something much more powerful — a driver of safety insight, risk awareness, and operational improvement.

At AP-SAS 2026, Session 12 — Beyond Coverage: The Insurance-Safety Nexus — will explore how the relationship between insurance and aviation safety is evolving, and what that means for operators, regulators, and industry partners across Asia Pacific.

As risk profiles become more complex and operations continue to expand, the connection between financial protection and operational safety performance is becoming clearer. Insurance partnerships are now playing a growing role in shaping risk management strategies, influencing safety priorities, and supporting innovation across the system.

Moderated by:
Jose Fernandez, Director, FSF Asia Pacific Centre for Aviation Safety

Featuring leaders from across the industry:
Mr. Adam Johns, Senior Vice President, Aviation Operational Risk Consulting, Marsh Risk
Mr. Jason Bok, Senior Vice President, Head Quality & Safety, Commercial Aerospace, ST Engineering
Mr. Tan Soon Keat, Regional Director, Asia, McLarens
Capt. Hideaki Miyachi, Vice President Safety Culture, Aviation Safety Research and Development, Japan Airlines

If you work in aviation safety, operations, insurance, risk, or organisational resilience, this session offers a fresh perspective on how different parts of the system can work together to improve safety outcomes.
