Physician discusses impact of COVID-19, vaccines on women's health 07/25/2021

No, the COVID-19 vaccines do not cause infertility in women, nor do they cause complications during birth or increase the chances of a miscarriage.

With that, Dr. Angela Langer, an obstetrician-gynecologist physician with Freeman Health System, addressed some of the greatest concerns she fields from expectant mothers.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there … it is untrue and unfounded,” she said, during a Wednesday morning briefing addressing the vaccines and pregnancies. Vaccines, she said, have a proven safety record of eradicating the disease, and the COVID-19 vaccine should be offered to women during pregnancy and the postpartum periods as well as when breastfeeding.

"As a Native midwife, I consider the journey and transitions that patients go through throughout the lifespan as ceremony. These times are pivotal moments that should incorporate whole physical, mental, and spiritual wellness, education, communication, shared decision making, healing, and growth. These moments also should include family as much or as little as the person wants.
Being able to support patients in this way is one of the many favorite things I enjoy about being a midwife."

Meet Brittany, a midwife who is experiencing a IRL.

Anna joins the UNM midwifery practice from the south Texas border where she began her midwifery career in the Rio Grande Valley. Anna discovered midwifery during her first interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree where she found opportunities to work and study with midwives at internships both in the US and in Mali, in West Africa. Her experiences in Mali solidified her desire to use her skills and knowledge to promote health equity and reproductive justice for all women. Anna graduated from Emory University as a dual certified Nurse Midwife and Family Nurse Practitioner in 2014. She then worked at a birth center followed by a busy hospital practice in south Texas where she helped introduce the midwifery model of care to the area. Anna sees her role as a midwife as a partnership with her patients, providing information and support so that they can make the best decisions for themselves and their families. She is excited to be joining such a dynamic team of midwives and doctors at UNM and is looking forward to exploring Albuquerque and spending time in the mountains.
