Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council Search and Rescue Team
Albuquerque Mountain Rescue is a volunteer technical search and rescue team specializing in mountain and wilderness rescue.
On February 19, 1955 a TWA plane bound for Santa Fe Crashed in the Sandia Mountains. The following day several members of the New Mexico Mountain Club, along with other volunteers assisted the New Mexico State Police in the recovery effort. Excellent weekend of search and rescue continuing education at ESCAPE 2026 presented by the New Mexico Search and Rescue Council.
Strong work Monday night/ Tuesday morning from Albuquerque Mountain Rescue, , Jemez Volunteer Fire Department and Los Alamos Auxiliary Fire Brigade in extracting a hiker who suffered a 100-ft fall in the Jemez Mountains. After teams scrambled through steep, unstable mountain terrain to the cliff bottom, a Sandoval County sheriff's department helicopter hovered to light the scene during patient treatment. Due to the terrain and severity of injuries, was requested. A smooth hoist was conducted, and teams were out of the field by 5 a.m. A strong unified command of New Mexico rescuers resulted in a good patient outcome that could have very easily gone another way.

Sandia Crest "Switchback" Project
In an effort to protect health and human safety and reduce critical infrastructure at risk to catastrophic wildfire, the Cibola National Forest is planning to implement the Sandia Crest “Switchback” Hazard Tree and Fuels Reduction Project beginning in spring 2026.
Visitor Access During "Switchback"
Project Closure Treatment of up to 140 acres of National Forest Lands means that closures will need to be in place for part of the project period to ensure visitor safety. The use of heavy machinery and log trucks to remove accumulated fuels will require partial closures of New Mexico Highway 536 which will have impacts to visitor access. Much loved trails and recreation destinations will be impacted, but visitors have an opportunity to explore alternative destinations on the Cibola National Forest until project work can be completed.
Visitors should anticipate closures to the highway and trails that lead towards the treatment area and plan alternative destinations accordingly.

Albuquerque Mountain Rescue is beginning the process for the 2026 Operational Core Curriculum class.
You must attend one of the info sessions below to receive the application info. There are three total and the last also has a virtual option as well. We have one coming up quite soon and then two that are fairly close to the application deadline. If you cannot make any of these sessions we can discuss alternatives ahead of time, there will be no additional make up sessions.
