Environmentally-conscious “green” living may be one of the most beneficial movements in the world today, yet most people associate green only with living. For people who want to preserve the environment, green funerals and green burials provide a way to make the end of life more meaningful too. For many people, a greener funeral represents an ethical as well as philosophical choice. For others, it is a way to find value and significance in a simpler funeral process.

A celebration of life can be as unique as the person you’re honoring. ⛰️
End of life choices can reflect a loved one’s passions, favorite places, and values. Passages International’s Mountain View scattering tube is one example of how a personalized, greener choice can make a hard farewell also deeply personal, special, and truly reflective of who they were.

Answer? Let’s break it down:
➤ Cremation might seem greener than burial, but it still releases about 534.6 pounds of CO₂ per body — that’s the equivalent of driving a car over 500 miles. 😬
➤ Alkaline hydrolysis (aka “water cremation”) is much gentler on the planet than flame cremation — it uses 1/8th the energy — but it still involves machinery and chemical agents.
➤ Embalmed burial in a metal casket? It involves toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, concrete vaults, and materials that can take decades or centuries to break down. Not so green.
So… what’s the greenest option of all?
