Before an exhibition opens, there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes. This time-lapse reel shows the salvaged 1936 Ford arriving at the Museum receiving dock and guided to its space on the platform where a recreation of neon intervention is installed as the artist, Jan Beauboeuf, envisioned when she pulled the wrecked car from the Galisteo Creek in 1981.
The Other Route 66 explores the histories, cultures, and communities that have made Albuquerque’s stretch of the Mother Road a place unlike any other.
On view through January 3, 2027.

🎞️ Picture This is back with Part 2 of our story on itinerant photographers and their time in Albuquerque.

In this episode, we follow the trail of an itinerant photographer documenting businesses during the Great Depression. Traveling from town to town with little more than a camera and an entrepreneurial spirit, itinerant photographers captured everyday moments and local businesses, creating a remarkable visual record.

Through photographs preserved in our archives, we gain a glimpse into Albuquerque as it appeared in 1930 and 1931—and the stories that continue to emerge from these images nearly a century later.

On Flag Day, the Museum celebrates the formal adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777. The stars and stripes has undergone many different iterations over its nearly 250 years of existence, with several different star patterns as new states were added to the union.

This 48-star flag offers a snapshot into American history, representing the annexation of New Mexico and Arizona on January 6 and February 14 of 1912.

Today the Museum joins all of Albuquerque in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first PRIDE parade held in the summer of 1976. A group of 25 gathered at Morningside Park in Nob Hill and marched on Central Avenue sidewalk to Yale Park and back. The parade has grown each year from a sidewalk march to an annual official parade and festival.

This is but one example in the Museum’s Permanent Collection of We, The People, striving for a more perfect union.
