An update from the Espanola Fire Chief
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Española Fire Department & City of Española Provide Update on Recent Fire Incident
The fire remains under investigation; however, investigators have determined the origin and cause of the fire. At this time, we can confirm that the fire was not caused by individuals experiencing homelessness.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) U.S. Wildland team currently has a Public Information Officer (PIO) on scene and will be issuing an official press release by the end of the day regarding the fire.
Firefighters and responding personnel did an outstanding job in protecting the community, successfully saving multiple homes, structures, and businesses.
Now that conditions have stabilized, the Española Fire Department and the City of Española would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the assisting fire departments and partner agencies who responded when requested—including law enforcement and the National Guard. Their professionalism, coordination, and commitment were instrumental in the successful response.
We also want to recognize and thank our residents and neighboring communities for their overwhelming support. The Española Valley is truly a remarkable place to live and work, and that spirit was clearly demonstrated throughout this incident.
Due to current extreme weather conditions, including dry and windy environments, the City of Española is under burn restrictions. We strongly urge the public to remain vigilant and to immediately report any signs of smoke or fire.
Finally, we extend our appreciation to everyone who provided food, water, and supplies to first responders. Your generosity and support are deeply appreciated.
With much gratitude,
Fire Chief Wickersham

CONTINUING FIRE COVERAGE : The Española Fire Department shared their latest update on the Riverside Fire. Current estimates indicate that the initial reported acreage was overestimated, and crews are working to determine a more accurate fire size.
At this time, the fire is not contained. However, fire behavior has significantly decreased, allowing crews to make progress.
Operations will continue with crew efforts and aerial support, including helicopter bucket drops.
At this time, one single-wide trailer, one recreational vehicle (RV), and two sheds have been confirmed lost in the fire. Damage assessments are ongoing.
Residents and businesses are advised to remain evacuated until further notice.
The Fire Chief of Espanola says as of now 4 structures have burned, 1 mobile home, 1 trailer, and 2 sheds. No injuries have been reported. Evacuation as of 9:30 p.m. from Santa Claran Casino to Fairview Bridge.
