Staff member Jack Mahoney’s pick!
This widely acclaimed film from Soviet director Elem Klimov is a stunning, senses-shattering plunge into the dehumanizing horrors of war. As N**i forces encroach on his small village in present-day Belarus, teenage Flyora (Aleksei Kravchenko, in one of the screen’s most searing depictions of anguish since Renée Falconetti’s Joan of Arc) eagerly joins the Soviet resistance. Rather than the adventure and glory he envisioned, what he finds is a waking nightmare of unimaginable carnage and cruelty—rendered with a feverish, otherworldly intensity by Klimov’s subjective camerawork and expressionistic sound design. Nearly suppressed by Soviet censors who took eight years to approve its script, Come and See is perhaps the most visceral, impossible-to-forget antiwar film ever made.
“This 1985 Soviet anti-war drama is one of the best movies ever made.” - Tom Cassidy, Common Sense Media
“A compelling, harrowing, absurdly beautiful account of the little known holocaust in Byelorussia.” - Victoria Mather, Daily Telegraph (UK)

One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes, engraved in ghostly black and white, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty.
“Mesmerizing, haunting, deeply moving.” - Diane Carson, KDHX (St. Louis)
“It is an arduous task, but the film achieves a transcendent and ethereal beauty that only the few truly great masterpieces attain.” - Derek Smith, Cinematic Reflections

DOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE OUTSTANDING SINGULAR IVAN DIXON FEATURE THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR (1973)!
A year after his supporting role in the blockbuster Shaft, Christopher St. John wrote, directed, and starred in this kaleidoscopic fever dream of a Black cop’s crisis of sanity after being passed over for a promotion, and the death of his mother.
With dreamlike imagery depicting St. John’s George Lattimer as a war hero, astronaut, and other representations of American idealism, the film tackles the contradiction of a Black man who follows the ‘rules’ in a position of power, only to find himself trapped in the same impossible position he was in before joining the police. Top of the Heap is an underrated twist on Blaxploitation cinema, and an essential piece of American independent film, free of studio interference and muddled messaging.
“As written, the film is punctuated by escapist visions in which Lattimer pictures himself a revered astronaut in a lacquered 2001-esque space station, but outer space isn’t far enough to elude the earthly news of his mother’s death; the only approaching celestial “voyage” on his itinerary is to her funeral in rural Alabama. In this dark substitution, the film reckons not only with systemic prejudice but the cosmic menace of aging and death—or rather, demonstrates Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s definition of racism as “the state-sanctioned or extralegal production and exploitation of group-differentiated vulnerability to premature death.”’ ~ Veronica Fitzpatrick, Screen Slate

DOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE UNDER PLAYED 70’S GEM TOP OF THE HEAP (1972)!
The film follows Dan Freeman (played by Lawrence Cook), an African American man who becomes the first black CIA officer. His hiring is initially a token gesture to placate civil rights activists and project an image of inclusivity within the agency. However, Freeman proves to be highly competent, quickly mastering espionage techniques and tactics. Despite his skills, he is relegated to a low-profile, menial position, symbolically seated by the door to serve as a token black employee. Growing increasingly disillusioned with the systemic racism and marginalization he experiences, Freeman decides to use his training for a revolutionary cause. He resigns from the CIA and returns to his hometown of Chicago, where he begins to recruit and train a militant group of young African Americans. Utilizing the guerrilla warfare techniques he learned at the CIA, Freeman’s group, disguised as a community organization, aims to fight against racial oppression and challenge the status quo. As Freeman’s insurgency grows, it attracts the attention of law enforcement and government officials, leading to a tense and escalating conflict. The film explores themes of racial identity, institutional racism, and the complexities of resistance. “The Spook Who Sat By the Door” is a powerful and thought-provoking film that examines the potential for radical change and the lengths to which oppressed individuals might go to achieve liberation.

DOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE GORDON PARKS JR. LEGENDARY BAD ASS ORIGINAL 70’S LANDMARK SUPER FLY (1972)!
The eternally cool William Marshall puts a fresh spin on the age-old legend of the vampire, condemned to wander the Earth with an insatiable lust for blood in these riveting Blaxploitation classics.
William Marshall (Twilight’s Last Gleaming, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Maverick) stars as African Prince Mamuwalde in Blacula, the avant-garde blaxploitation horror film that’s both subversive and refreshingly entertaining. In 1780, Mamuwalde travels to Transylvania seeking Count Dracula’s (Charles Macaulay, Splash, Star Trek) support for the abolition of the slave trade between their countries. Instead, Dracula curses the prince by transforming him into a vampire and locking him in a coffin. Two centuries later, Blacula is set free in modern day Los Angeles to terrorize the city in his nightly quest for blood. William Crain (Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde, TV’s The Dukes of Hazzard) directs and Vonetta McGee (Hammer, The Eiger Sanction, Repo Man, The Great Silence), Denise Nicholas (Let’s Do It Again, TV’s In the Heat of the Night, Room 222), Elisha Cook (Rosemary’s Baby, The KIlling, House on Haunted HIll) and Thalmus Rasulala (Friday Foster, New Jack City, Above the Law) co-star!
“Blacula is beautiful, a totally entertaining movie that is not only a successful satire... but also provides a number of genuinely terrifying moments.” - Dick Lochte, Los Angeles Free Press
“Vibrant funking-up of Hammer bloodsuckers” - Fernando F. Croce, CinePassion

DOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE WILLIAM MARSHALL DRIVE-IN CLASSIC BLACULA (1972)!
Priest is a prince of the streets, a charismatic businessman who wants out of cocaine-dealing. But a mysterious kingpin doesn’t want Priest to change his ways. And that triggers murder, revenge and double-crosses that push Priest into a corner — and heat the neighborhood to flash point.
Super Fly is one of the more enduring streetwise films of its era, due to the dynamic central performance of Ron O’Neal (Red Dawn, Original Gangstas), the sizzling score by Curtis Mayfield and the gritty direction of the late Gordon Parks, Jr. (Three the Hard Way, Aaron Loves Angela). Super Fly is super entertainment with an indelible message. It’s life on the edge, put together by talents who know just how sharp it can get.
“Classic blaxlpoitation film is still one of the best to come out of the genre. O’Neal gives a fine (but always funky) performance ... (a) terrific soundtrack.”Larry Carroll, Countingdown.com
“Among the early and most sacred films in the Blacksploitation cannon, 1972’s Super Fly is a towering pillar in many circles.” - Ed Travis, Cinapse
“This is a quintessential blaxploitation film. And it’s fun as hell to watch.” - Ted Prigge, rec.arts.movies.reviews
