Amparo is a nonprofit dedicated to assisting families in need of emergency housing.

01/12/2025

We’re so grateful to the La Montanita Co-op community for supporting Amparo through August’s Round Up for Change program.

Your generosity creates lasting change—thank you for inspiring hope, one rounded-up purchase at a time! 💙

Small Change = BIG Impact!

Thank you for your continued support of our Round Up for Change program. During the month of August shoppers rounded up their purchases for a total of $8,767.60 donated to Amparo.

“A Heartfelt Thank You to the La Montanita Coop Community!
Thanks to your generosity in “rounding up” in August, you’ve helped create incredible, lasting change for families supported by Amparo.”

Here are just a few success stories from the families you’ve helped:

Success Story Alert:
One family faced major obstacles in accessing housing vouchers and had to enter the shelter system. But with guidance from Amparo and support from Albuquerque Public Schools McKinney Vento Program, they’re now self-sufficient and stably housed. After months of perseverance, they’ve built a life where they can thrive, and they’re deeply grateful to everyone who played a part in their journey.

Celebrating Progress:
Another family’s journey began last fall when they worked with Amparo and our school partners. After six months of dedicated support, they were finally ready and able to receive the resources they needed. Today, they’re settled into their new home and filled with joy at having a stable place to call their own. Thank you for making this transformation possible!

Stability Achieved:
For yet another family, the road to stability meant learning to manage a new budget and developing a sustainable housing and financial plan. With Amparo’s help and guidance from our partners, they’ve reached a place of true security and independence. They’re beyond proud of the progress they’ve made, and they’re thrilled about the future they’re building.

Furnishing New Beginnings:
Each family’s journey involves more than just finding a home. As they take these steps, Amparo and our partners continue to provide essential housewares, helping to relieve the financial burden of setting up a new space. Your contributions make this possible and help turn a house into a home.

Thank you for standing with us in support of these families. Every bit of kindness from you brings hope and stability to those working to create a better life.

🏘️ Housing is a Human Right!🏘️

At Amparo, we believe in the power of safe, stable housing for every family. This recent The New York Times op-ed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezz and underscores the urgent need to decommodify housing.

As advocates, we stand in solidarity with efforts to recognize that housing is a human right and a public good for all. We know that housing stability builds strong, resilient communities. By supporting housing laws such as this one, we can create real, lasting change for our communities.

Opinion | Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Tina Smith: Our Solution to the Housing Crisis (Gift Article) Instead of treating real estate as a commodity, we can underwrite the construction of millions of permanently affordable homes and apartments.

Homelessness is a housing problem. At Amparo, we believe that keeping people housed and protecting them from eviction is an effective means of preventing homelessness. But we also recognize the need for more affordable housing options. “Studies consistently show that a lack of affordable housing is the best predictor of homelessness. Whereas housing markets characterized by high rent prices and low vacancy rates are shown to drive homelessness, variations in rates of homelessness across communities in the U.S. do not appear to be related to the number of individuals suffering from mental illness or substance use disorders whatsoever.”

The stereotype that people experiencing homelessness have lost housing due to mental illness or substance abuse has misinformed many policies and system-level solutions needed to adequately address mental illness, substance abuse, and homelessness.

About amparonewmexico :

•Believes that housing is a human right and should be made available to all who need it.

•Recognize the critical link between housing stability and student physical, mental, and emotional health.

•Amparo’s board is made up of volunteers so that 100% of funding donated goes to the purpose of eviction prevention and housing assistance.

•All rent assistance requests are vetted and submitted to Amparo by community school coordinators in the ABC Community School network or social workers from the APS Title I McKinney-Vento Program, which offers many services to homeless children and families. 📸: Furnishing New Beginnings! When Amparo and our partners work with a family to obtain housing, support shifts from securing housing to maintaining it. This includes providing housewares to newly housed families and helping to relieve the financial burden of furnishing a new home. Every little bit makes a big difference!
