The 36th Annual Visitor Studies Association Conference in St. Paul MN begins! This morning we kicked off the conference with an expression of our commitment to equity, justice, sustainability, and community. We opened with remarks by local leaders who are advocating for justice and equity, including Cantemaza from Wakan Tipi Awanyankapi and Jeanelle Austin from Rise and Remember. Jill Stein (VSA President) introduced our new REDEFINE initiative, where we will be working to redefine what it means to be a visitor studies professional to highlight the importance of being responsive to and continually in conversation with the communities we serve. We ended our opening plenary with a talk by Coral Gessner, who reminded us that power is abundant and something that can be shared. She encouraged us to reconnect to our own sources of power to express genuine care for our community and invite more voices into the conversation. What a beginning!
