Surplus 1980 is a Bay Area post-punk rock band fronted by former Sleepytime Gorilla Museum percussionist, Moe! Built on the foundation laid by instrumental no-wave post-rock band, Mute Socialite, Surplus 1980's music is a thicker brew with an out-jazz touch and more than a dash of punk ferocity. Surplus 1980 has a well-chosen name—as long as you pick up on the right musical references—the skewed-p

• (There Is) Too Much Music describes a musician's perspective of the current state of the music industry—from the sheer volume of music being made to the existence of (shudder) fake AI music.
• As Yet Unfulfilled is an instrumental movement culled from a larger work that Surplus 1980 created during the pandemic, with shades of Krautrock and an unintentional nod to By-Tor.
Come check it out! See you there!

Surplus 1980 will be releasing a pair of tracks from last year’s recording session as a single +1 release in time for Bandcamp Friday on 5 December! A task feat that we hope to accomplish, along with altering everyone to check out out and spread the word. It features our previous bassist, who also plays melodica on one track as well.
We are still in search of a bassist/vocalist/multi-whathaveyou, and hope to find a likely a fitting person who is not flaky and strong with their playing and communication.

In the meantime, SURPLUS 1980 finally removed all of our content from Spotify. We encourage others to follow and get off that platform and not support that crap that Spotify supports. **kspotify

Latest news for Surplus 1980.
Surplus 1980 is going on break (semi-hiatus) for the next few months, at least through December. We lost Emmalee back in July and will eventually be looking for a bassist who can sing and play other instruments. I’ve been wanting to press reset on the direction of the musical direction of the band and will use the time to demo some new material while holding onto a select few older tracks to keep on the remainder of the live set.
We did have a couple of interested people to take over bass duties. One person introduced herself as wanting to be the next member of Surplus but went AWOL after asking how things were progressing and neglected follow-up communication. Another promising person was interested but was courteous to let us know that she had an obligation to fulfill and wouldn’t be available until after December. While we will take the time off and hope to try again with the second person after December that we hope to start again soon if it is meant to be. If another person comes along that I feel is right for Surplus that we will try them out, but there isn’t.
I will say that this will be the last try for Surplus 1980. 2024 had a few victories (playing at the UC Theater, going to Colorado for two big shows, all with SGM) but a lot (and I mean a loooooot) of downsides and setbacks (shows to be asked on only to be continuously be turned down, getting taken off a West Coast tour with Free Salamander Exhibit/Uz Jsme Doma, and ghosted from recording new songs that were proposed to Avant Night, and of course, losing Emmalee) really put the bruises on us. Things are waaaay slow for us (always have) and I am always hoping that, with some spark of luck, will turn things around for us. It’s a continuous battle of fighting with both arms tied behind your back that there’s no point that eats away at you. We’re hoping after December that things will start to look up. We will see. This is our last leg.
We will at least have two songs that we will mix with Eli Knowles (as well as add a few overdubs) from last year’s Atomic Garden studio recording from the aborted Avant Night sessions that we’ll have to tie us over on an upcoming BandCamp Friday for the time being. So, you’ll at least have that to enjoy, maybe. So, stay tuned. Be good everyone.
