Happy World Ocean Day! The ocean makes up about 70% of the earth's surface, so it's important that we all do our part to keep it clean. How can you help?

- Sort your waste into trash, recyclables and compostable materials
- Keep your storm drains clear of debris
- Participate in local river cleanups, not only to keep our local waterways clean, but to prevent trash from flowing into Lake Erie and other large bodies of water

There are so many reasons to be hopeful about the ocean's future. Over the last few years, scientists have taken inspiration from the animal kingdom for creative solutions to our microplastic pollution problem. Moon jellies, like the ones in the Curious Creatures area of the zoo, produce mucus that contains a protein that traps and filters microplastics. Lab-based trials suggest that jelly mucus is nearly 100% effective at trapping the smallest particles before they reach the ocean.

Today, we officially broke ground on our next major expansion! Lehner Family Foundation Giraffe Journey is expected to open in 2028!

Giraffe Journey will introduce multiple new species for the Akron Zoo – giraffes, ostriches, wildebeests and Marabou storks. The area will feature a large, outdoor savanna featuring the mix of species, plus the Landon & Cynthia Knight Giraffe Conservation Center. This center will include an indoor space for guests to visit the giraffe during the winter months. Guests will have the opportunity to feed the giraffes year-round.

This will be the largest expansion to date in the Akron Zoo history at approximately 9.25 acres. The area also includes a gift shop, concessions stand, event space and a tower ride that is available for all ages.

Boxie and Pagos, our resident Galapagos tortoises, recently underwent a minor procedure to prepare them for their outdoor habitat. Boxie had an infection underneath her shell, and our vet and animal care teams worked together closely for months to treat her. Once Boxie made a full recovery, her care team also cleaned and packed the divots on the bottom of both her and Pagos’ shells with colorful beeswax as a preventative for any future injury before the girls went outside for the first time this year.

The animals at the Akron Zoo all receive exceptional care, whether they are furry, scaly or shelly.

Today, both Boxie and Pagos are doing well and are enjoying the gorgeous weather!
