Following the tragic death of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana understandably crumbled. In order to heal and refocus, drummer Dave Grohl recorded an album of his own songs, playing all the instruments himself. This was ultimately released simply as Foo Fighters—a band that wasn’t really a band, but sure sounded like one. The album garnered plenty of attention, and in no time at all, Grohl had assembled a proper band to continue the journey.

Released in May 1997, The Color and the Shape, the second Foo Fighters album, introduced band members Nate Mendel on bass and Pat Smear (formerly of the Germs and Nirvana) on guitar, while Grohl handled drums, guitars, and vocals, helping establish the signature Foo Fighters sound of melodic hard rock.

Songs like “Everlong,” “Monkey Wrench,” and “My Hero” (often interpreted as being inspired by Cobain) remain Foo Fighters standards to this day. Their appeal continued to grow, ultimately making them one of the most popular rock bands of their era—a status they proudly maintain. This platinum platter truly kicked the door open for Grohl and company.

Living legends 15 60 75 Numbers Band tonight for the fourth and final installment of this summer’s “Downtown at Dusk” at the Akron Art Museum

The 1990s were ripe for subgenres of subgenres. From the many varieties of heavy metal and punk to the various shades of country, folk and beyond, electronic-based music — pioneered by the likes of Kraftwerk, Beaver & Krause, Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream, to name a few — got a total makeover during that era. New labels such as “electronica,” “trip-hop” and “EDM” emerged to describe up-and-comers like the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, Red Snapper and more.

Enter Portishead. Formed in 1991 by musician Geoff Barrow and vocalist Beth Gibbons, the duo began assembling its own sonic attack, combining elements of soul, ambient music, psychedelia, experimental rock and hip-hop production techniques that were in vogue at the time. Gibbons’ haunting vocal style became the group’s unmistakable calling card.

Some called it “trip-hop,” while others simply got lost in the space-tinged vibe that felt as much at home in a nightclub as it did on a movie soundtrack. Their debut album, Dummy, spawned the hits “Sour Times,” “Glory Box” and “Numb,” while earning relentless five-star reviews from the music press worldwide.
