Look what came home! 👀 For more than TWO DECADES, this 6-foot Summit FM sign hung on the side of the Saalfield Square building in South Akron.

And now… somehow… it’s back in our possession! 📻❤️

So the question is: What in the world do we do with it?!

Do we…

🛠️ Refurbish it with our new logo and find it a new home?
🏛️ Preserve it exactly as it is and donate it to the Akron History Center or Summit County Historical Society?
💰 Put it on Antiques Roadshow and discover it’s worth $47?
🚀 Launch it into space so aliens can finally discover Northeast Ohio’s best radio station?
🔥 Strap it to the roof of the Summit FM HHR like some sort of public-radio Bat-Signal?

Or… something else entirely?

This old sign has seen a LOT of Summit FM history. Now we need to figure out what its next chapter should be.

Released in the spring of 1967, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You was Aretha Franklin’s ninth LP and her first for Atlantic Records. The album was a showcase not only for her vocal power, but for her ability to make a song her own as well. From the first blast of the classic “Respect,” a song written and originally recorded by Otis Redding but tailor-made for Miss Franklin, through to the finale of Sam Cooke’s civil rights anthem, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” it was, in many ways, a career-defining work.

The album was a gold-selling triumph and spawned three top-selling singles. The aforementioned “Respect” hit number one on both the pop and R&B charts, while “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” and the title track — which also hit the top spot on the R&B charts — further cemented the album’s success.

Though she had been making records for nearly a decade at the time, nothing had truly caught fire. Once she signed to Atlantic, with Jerry Wexler producing, it all changed. This was the first step in that transformation, a move that would lead to a decade-long run of hits and acclaimed albums including Aretha Now, Lady Soul, Young, Gifted and Black, and others.

Summit FM Red Guitar Club x Ziggy Marley

Our members got up close with before he took stage, and it was a night to remember.

Ziggy and the band ran a 7-8 song soundcheck, and it wasn't a quick one. He may seem mellow, but on stage he's a perfectionist, and that focus showed in every note.

Thank you, Ziggy, for kicking off your tour in Akron!

The show was full of his father's timeless music, plus hits from his 8 Grammy-winning records. The new record, Brightside, is out now: healing, positivity, and a heartfelt tribute to his dad.
