Social emotional learning and brain wellness education through peer support and mentorship

06/03/2026

🧠 WISDOM WEDNESDAY 🧠

There is power in student mentorship in schools 💙

Mentorship—whether from a trusted adult or a fellow student—has a lasting impact on students and their mental health. Positive relationships help them feel supported, connected, and valued.

One of BEI’s differentiators is that we lead our program and curriculum with a peer-to-peer approach to mentorship. This promotes leadership skills, comfort and vulnerability for students, and a unique approach unlike any other program.

MENTORSHIP HELPS:
✨ Reduce loneliness and isolation
✨ Build confidence and self-esteem
✨ Strengthen coping skills and resilience
✨ Create a sense of belonging
✨ Encourage positive peer relationships

Sometimes, one supportive connection is all it takes to help a young person thrive. When schools invest in mentorship, they invest in mental health prevention and brighter futures.

💙 COMMUNITY MATTERS 💙

At BEI, community isn’t something we participate in occasionally. Instead, it’s built into how we operate, how we show up, and how we create impact. We believe real change happens through collaboration and effort in the spaces where people live, grow, and heal.

“Community” is one of the pillars and values of our organization, so it is very important to us.

This year, we have focused on putting ourselves out into the local community — we volunteered to help the homeless in Akron by serving them Thanksgiving meals, spread our mental health prevention message to over 400 people at a local duck race event in downtown Cuyahoga Falls, and even donated a health and wellness basket to the Richfield Community Day, last summer. We have shared our BEI story and mission with many listeners on the radio and have been featured on several podcasts.

Community is more than a location. It’s the people, partnerships, and support systems that help us connect. We’re grateful for our community partners and relationships. They truly help us stay motivated and make this work possible 🌱 We are firm believers in putting our heart and soul into this area and showing up with kindness, strength, and dedication.

This summer, we also have community partners who will be teaching and making an impact on middle and high school students at our upcoming BEI Brain Boot Camp. They will focus on building stronger minds through:

🍎 Brain nourishment and nutrition with Brittany Valentine of Balance Vitality
🧘‍♀️ Self-awareness and yoga with Lauren Bentley of Half Moon Yoga Medina
🗣️ Self-management with Sarah Margida of Mindful Margida

Dr. Daniel Amen, founder and CEO of Amen Clinics and a psychiatrist dedicated to advancing brain health through clinical care, research, and education, recently shared a video that caught our attention.

He lists 5 things he would never do for his mental health as a psychiatrist👇:
1. Believe every thought 💭
2. Say everything that comes to mind 🧠
3. Stay up late 💤
4. Eat anything desired 🍽️
5. Take medication without trying natural solutions FIRST 💊

Mental health isn’t shaped by one big decision—it’s often influenced by the everyday habits and choices we make over time.

🧠 WISDOM WEDNESDAY 🧠

Caring for your mental health also means caring for your physical health 💪

We often talk about mood as if it only comes from the mind. But the truth is, your mood is also deeply connected to your body and how well you take care of it.

What we call a “bad mood” can sometimes be our body trying to communicate unmet needs—whether that’s lack of sleep, low energy, dehydration, poor nutrition, or stress we’ve been carrying without realizing it.

Your mind doesn’t operate separately from the rest of you—it’s part of a system that responds to everything you give it 🌱

The way you nourish your body, prioritize rest, engage in movement, stay hydrated, and navigate stress all contribute to your mood and overall emotional well-being.

🦆 DUCK

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is notice.

Notice the quiet friend.
Notice the change in mood.
Notice when someone doesn’t seem like themselves.

Mental health prevention starts with paying attention 💛

And, it starts before the chase.

🦆 DUCK

“Are you okay?”

Those three words matter more than you think.
Checking in reminds people they are seen, valued, and not alone.

A simple conversation can make a big difference 💬
Every ‘duck’ matters before someone becomes the ‘goose’.

🪿 GOOSE

Big feelings happen.
Stress happens.
Hard days happen.

That’s why mental health prevention matters.

Mental health prevention means:
✔ Teaching coping skills
✔ Talking about feelings
✔ Building safe connections
✔ Knowing when to ask for help

Knowing coping skills, asking for help, and having support systems in place can change everything 🧠💛

Don’t wait for crisis.
Act and build the tools early.
