Cuyahoga Falls will activate the Natatorium as a cooling center Tuesday through Friday. Check-in for the cooling center is at the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department at 2310 Second Street. The entrance is near the Oakwood Drive intersection. Also all community centers in Summit County will have extended hours through Thursday.

Today, Mayor Malik and Ward 1 Councilmember Fran Wilson (they/them) introduced legislation expressing the City of Akron's opposition to Ohio House Bill 249 and reaffirming the City's commitment to the dignity, safety, and equal treatment of LGBTQ+ residents. House Bill 249 would create new criminal penalties related to so-called "adult cabaret performances" and includes provisions that specifically apply to performers whose gender identity differs from their s*x assigned at birth. City leaders expressed concern that the legislation could contribute to discrimination, stigmatization, and unequal treatment while creating uncertainty around constitutionally protected expression and community events. Ohio House Bill 249 passed the Ohio House of Representatives and is currently sitting in the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee.

The City of Akron’s proposed resolution states that Akron welcomes and values residents of all s*xual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions and urges the Ohio Senate to reject legislation that targets or marginalizes transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and LGBTQ+ Ohioans.
