Akron Chapter DAR

Akron Chapter DAR and Martha Devotion Huntington Chapter DAR of Bay Village attended the Special Naturalization Ceremony at Severance Hall in Cleveland. Both chapters donated items for the gift bags. Seventy-three individuals from six continents and thirty-four countries were congratulated for their newly acquired citizenship.

Thanks to Akron Chapter DAR members for their donations. Akron Chapter member and labor/delivery nurse at Cleveland Clinic/Akron General Hospital Patty Barrett prepared the gift bags for the first baby boy and first baby girl born at Akron Summa and Cleveland Clinic/Akron General.

Akron Chapter DAR associate member Heidi Blinka and member Wendy Brott attended the opening ceremony of the 135th Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.

First Lieutenant Sharon Ann Lane made history as the only American military nurse killed in action during the Vietnam War.

On June 8, 1969, while serving at the 312th Evacuation Hospital in Chu Lai, Vietnam, Lt. Lane was caring for wounded soldiers when the hospital came under a sudden rocket attack. Refusing to leave her patients, she continued helping the injured until a rocket struck the ward, fatally wounding her. She was just 25 years old.

Known for her compassion, courage, and devotion to others, Sharon Ann Lane gave her life while trying to save the lives of fellow soldiers. For her sacrifice, she was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.

Her legacy lives on as a reminder that heroism is not only found on the battlefield, but also in those who risk everything to care for others in the middle of war. 🇺🇸
