Monday Memories: On this day 198 years ago, about noon the first canalboat left Akron amidst much fanfare and huzzah heading north on the first complete portion of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Local lore says that when the first boat reached Boston, a second boat fell in behind it. That boat was laden with goods people from the local area had grown or produced: lumber, grain, flour, and other goods to be shipped out. People cheered long and loud, for that second boat was the economic future.
