Some kitchens don't need a demo day. They just need a little love. 🏡✨
The original wish from this Merriman Hills client was for us to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room and replace the 60-year-old knotty pine cabinets. But as we worked through the design, we realized we’d be removing some of the home’s best character!
Instead, we revived the original cabinets with Krud Kutter and Wise Owl Paint’s Wood Salve, kept the charming pass-through, and added quartz countertops, a panel-ready fridge, Marmoleum flooring and wallpaper from January Paint & Wallpaper.
The finishing touch was a pendant light over the sink that perfectly matches the client’s family heirloom crystal glasses.

Hazel Tree Design Studio is breaking new ground (literally!) in Fairlawn. 🏠
Well, technically Dan Marchetta Realty, Inc. is doing the groundbreaking, but we’re excited to be part of what comes next! Hazel Tree has been hired to create the interior design plans for this brand-new townhome development.
Coming soon are 22 new three-story townhomes, each designed to give future homeowners the opportunity to make their space feel like home before they even move in.
Buyers can choose from three thoughtfully curated finish plans by the Hazel Tree design team, including two neutral and one colorful option, to personalize their two- or three-bedroom townhome before it’s built.

MCM 101: Intentional Color 🎨
Continuing our Mid-Century Modern series! Let's talk color.
A common misconception about MCM design is that it's all neutral furnishings with white walls. Not even close. The original movement embraced bold, retro-inspired color with confidence, and this home shows it off in more than one way.
A deep plum lounge chair anchors the sunroom seating area, one rich, confident color choice grounded by neutral walls and warm wood tones.
A geometric chair back mixes mustard, rust, teal, and gray in a single graphic pattern, proof that color can come from print instead of paint.
A vintage abstract painting in mustard and rust, sourced from Sweet Modern along with the dining set beneath it, does the same job on a larger scale, anchoring the whole dining room around it.
And don't miss the burnt-orange-glazed brick on the fireplace — a classic MCM shape and installation pattern that adds yet another confident color moment to the home.
This house refresh is an example of how MCM spaces use color: one confident choice per area!

MCM 101: Harmonious Materials 🪵
Continuing our Mid-Century Modern series! We've covered form follows function and the low-and-lean look; now let's talk materials.
MCM design lives and dies by contrast. And MCM design has a rule that's easy to miss: nothing beautiful should be made of just one material.
Walk through this Akron home, and you'll see the formula everywhere.
Warm walnut wood paired with cool navy lacquer and brushed brass hardware. Soft cognac leather set against black-and-white marble and a cast-iron fireplace tool set. Woven cane tabletops sit right next to exposed brick. Even the small details follow the rule: a black metal lamp with a brass stem, next to a hand-carved wood bird.
None of these pairings happen by accident. MCM designers believed that a natural material needed a structural one nearby to really read as special. Wood alone is just wood. Wood next to brass, or velvet next to marble, becomes something worth noticing.
That contrast, natural against structural, soft against hard, warm against cool, is what keeps a room from ever feeling flat or one note. It's also why a house full of different materials can still feel completely cohesive instead of chaotic.

We are so excited and honored to bring resident ideas to life in another City of Akron park with Akron Parks Collaborative!
Waters Park Update!
The Waters Park team kicked off our work with Hazel Tree Design Studio yesterday with a meeting at the park. Hazel Tree will be helping design seating and art elements for several areas throughout Waters Park.
Our conversation explored ideas for seating, public art, picnic areas, wayfinding, accessibility, and ways to reflect the diverse community and history surrounding Waters Park. At the overlook, we also talked about taking advantage of the beautiful views toward downtown Akron.
These are still early conversations, and Hazel Tree will use the team's input to begin exploring design possibilities. We look forward to sharing more as the ideas take shape!
