Cabinet hardware is often underestimated. Think of it like the jewelry on an outfit or the icing on the cake.

At Hazel Tree, we've learned that hardware isn't just functional; it's expressive. One of the biggest mistakes we see is choosing a single style and size, then repeating it everywhere.

What you're looking at here is actually one home, and that's our favorite detail to share. Each room has its own personality, its own story. Still, you'd know they belong to the same home and the same family.

A few things we always keep in mind:

K***s on doors, pulls on drawers. There are exceptions, but this guideline exists for good reason — doors and drawers have different ergonomics.

Hardware should scale with the cabinet it lives on. What works on a small spice drawer usually won't work on a pantry.

Two metals, not three. We love mixing metal finishes across appliances, lighting, and plumbing fixtures. A third starts to feel accidental.

If you look through these photos, you'll notice a mix of finishes, shapes, and styles from room to room. But our favorite details are the ones that actually speak to the space they're in.

Can you spot the wavy pulls in the pool bath? A quiet nod to water. Or the bubble-embossed pulls in the laundry room? Soap bubbles. Every choice is intentional.

Do you remember this beautiful rendering of the future plaza space at Prentiss Park?

The previous shuffleboard area is being transformed into a vibrant gathering space for the community. It will feature colorful seating and co****le boards. ADA-accessible seating will also be installed under the pavilion, creating a welcoming place for people to gather and connect.

We’re excited to share that excavation of the area was completed this month. Next month, concrete will be poured, followed by the installation of the seating, bringing this vision to life.

We sat down with artist Tara Deetscreek Artist to talk about her craft, her creative community, and what she hopes people feel when they live with her work. Here's what she had to say. ✨

"I've been a multimedia artist for most of my life. I earned a degree in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics and a minor in drawing. Those two disciplines have always been my greatest artistic passions, so when I discovered plaster bas-relief, it felt like everything I loved about art converged into a single medium. Discovering it felt less like finding a new medium and more like finding the place where all of my artistic interests naturally belonged."

"One of the things I hope people notice is how the artwork changes throughout the day as the light changes. Because bas-relief relies on depth, texture, highlights, and shadows, the piece can feel completely different from morning to evening. I love the idea that a homeowner might notice something new months or even years after an installation is completed. More than anything, I hope the work creates a sense of beauty, wonder, and quiet discovery."

"My favorite part of working with the Hazel Tree team is their incredible creative vision. They approach interior design with great thought and originality, and they have a unique ability to solve design challenges in beautiful, unexpected ways. One of our favorite projects together was a modern organic bas-relief feature wall created as the backdrop to a stunning grand piano in an urban loft. Abstract, bold, and completely one of a kind. What a beautiful tribute in Kenmore’s Prentiss Park!

We are so excited to soon have Akron Glass Works as our neighbors in West Hill!

There's no shortage of things to put on a shelf. Finding the right things is a different job entirely.

For our project with Summit County Land Bank, the Summit County Historical Society opened its archives to us. Their collection holds the visual and material memory of Akron and the county.

We spent time pulling books, studying artifacts, and asking lots of questions. Our team wanted to learn what each piece meant and why it mattered.

Local antique shops came next. Moving through them slowly, looking for pieces with real history, not just something to fill a space.

When we got to the offices, we found even more history waiting. Many of the objects on the shelves came from the staff’s personal collections, pieces they'd held onto and were happy to share. Cynthia Knight also let us scan photographs from the Knight family's personal photo albums, adding another layer of local memory to the shelves.

The result: many of the books, artifacts, and objects on these shelves have roots in Summit County. Some are decades old. Some are more than a century.

We love that this space reflects history, gathered carefully, shelf by shelf.

🥳 Today is pretty special for us because 16 years ago, we opened the doors to Hazel Tree!

Since Day One, we’ve had the privilege of working with amazing clients and artisans on homes, commercial offices and hospitality spaces, indoor & outdoor places that serve the community, and our beloved Akron city parks! Together with awesome supporters like you, we’ve shaped spaces that are personal, purposeful, and deeply loved! Yay! 🙌

Our work has always been rooted in the belief that good design should do more than look beautiful, and we should always ask this question first: “Can we have that made locally?” Especially because of our local focus, we are feeling incredibly grateful for every employee, client, collaborator, artist, contractor, sales rep, and supporter who has been part of our story.

Here’s to 16 more years of creating community joy through our work in designing spaces!

Rooms like these shown don't happen by accident. The fireplace, the layered textiles, the warm tones….all of it takes thought. And quietly holding it all together? The rug.

It's one of the most asked-about things in our work, and the conversation is always the same: function first, then everything else. Because a rug that looks right but doesn't work for the life being lived around it isn't actually right.

A rug should anchor the entire seating area, not just sit under the coffee table. Get the scale wrong, and the room feels disconnected.

Material should match real life. Kids, pets, and entertaining. There are beautiful, durable options now, including indoor/outdoor rugs made from recycled materials that feel nothing like the old versions.

And don't skip the pad. It changes the feel completely and protects the floor underneath.
