Let's give a warm welcome to our new Education Outreach Coordinator Melih Meric! . We're excited to have them join the team. As they step into the role, we also want to thank Nyki Fetterman, who previously served as our Education Outreach Coordinator, for their contributions to Summit Artspace. Artist Bio: Melih Meric (b.1998, Istanbul/Turkey) is a printmaker and educator. They received their MFA in Print Media from Cranbrook Academy of Art, and BA from Bennington College in Printmaking. Melih has been an educator through the Essential Experiences program in partnership with APS, serving as a Gallery Teacher at the Akron Art Museum and previously as Educator at the Akron Children’s Museum.

Their visual arts practice explores a spiritual journey through Islamic geometric abstraction. Using printmaking as their main medium, they create works that talk about diaspora, assimilation and a combination of Middle Eastern traditional practices. Their works combine traditional pattern making and a contemporary way of creating editions of prints. With a passion for pattern and paper, they use innovative methods of printmaking and textile arts to create stitched editions and embossed works on paper. Their works have been exhibited in NYC, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Wisconsin, Vermont, Texas and internationally in Germany, Australia, Netherlands, Austria, and Turkey.

They received the Individual Excellence in Visual Arts Award by the Ohio Arts Council in 2025, and serve as a member of the selection committee for Waterloo Arts Gallery in Cleveland.

The Emerging Artist Residency (EAR) studio at Summit Artspace is a temporary shared workspace for recent grads and other emerging artists at pivotal points in their careers. Since 2020, the EAR studio has served 12 local emerging artists with free studio space as well as access to a community of artists, resources, and the general public.

Through an ArtsForward grant from ArtsNow, the studio will be transformed into an artist incubator program to help launch sustainable careers for local emerging artists through access to free workspace, mentorship, exhibition opportunities, professional development, and stipends. Summit Artspace is seeking two artists to fill the shared studio space and join current EAR artists Madison McSweeney and Ashley Strub. The opportunity is for September 2026 - September 2027, although the option to extend the stay in the EAR studio will be available for up to 2 years (without stipend).

Selection committee is comprised of previous EAR Studio residents Alexia Avdelas and Abby Cipar.

A decision will be made by August 24 with move in date as early as September 1.

Selected artists will receive 1 year of:
Free shared studio space with 3 other peer artists
Monthly $350 stipend for unrestricted use
Access to mentorship sessions with Summit Artspace and established local artists
Access to exhibition opportunities at Summit Artspace

Artist Qualifications
Must be an emerging artist (those with a practice of 5 years or less–can be all ages and returning to their practice)
In a moment of transition (recent graduate, recently moved, preparing for education or residency)
Demonstrated need through the application prompts
Demonstrated benefit of a shared space through the application prompts
Priority will be given to artists living in Summit County (Artists in contiguous counties–Cuyahoga, Geauga, Medina, Portage, Stark, Wayne–may apply)

Expectations
Must pass a background check at artist's expense
Must adhere to Summit Artspace building usage and lease terms

Prismatic Echoes | //benitez_vogl studio

Inspired by László Moholy-Nagy's light explorations and Luigi Russolo's Art of Noises, Prismatic Echoes is an immersive installation merging 3D-printed kinetic sculptures and projections. Intricate moving lattices generate rhythmic, textural soundscapes that evolve with each rotation. Shifting geometric patterns and textile forms serve as dynamic canvases for mapped light and video, casting continuously transforming visuals across surfaces. By fusing digital technology, avant-garde acoustics, raw materiality, and deliberate physical movement, the pieces actively interrogate and reshape their environment.

Light Remains | Meaghan M. Reed

Meaghan M. Reed’s intricate, layered mixed-media artworks in Light Remains emerged from her need to grieve and hold memories close. Within flowers are fragments of family memories, childhood remnants, and relics of time and place; also present are her brother’s own photographs which help to shape a narrative about the fragility and immense value of a life cut short. In the aftermath of loss, language often falters—there is both a silence that settles inside, and a restless urge to articulate what feels uncontainable.
Intersections Gallery

Vessels | Kat Francis

Vessels is a body of mixed-media collages and sketchbook pieces that explores the quiet, mutual experiences which shape human life. These works are constructed as vignettes—small, intimate glimpses into everyday life—that reflect the universal way of living, caring, gathering, and being. Using collage and layered materials, Kat Francis builds three-dimensional scenes as memory and observation. These forms hold and protect the moments they contain, pointing to the idea that our daily lives, however ordinary, carry meaning and weight. At a time distinguished by division—across race, class, and ideology—Vessels is an effort to return attention to what connects us.

Shelter as a Human Right | Group Exhibition

Curated by Eric Tuck-Macalla, Shelter as a Human Right explores what it means to be unsheltered, to be under the strain of housing insecurity, and to be a refugee in today’s social climate. This group exhibition features two- and three-dimensional artworks created by artists from the unhoused community that Macalla assists at St. Paul's UCC in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as Macalla’s own sculptural structures. Visitors will experience emotional representations of home, hearth, and shelter, through the lens of individuals who have experienced this displacement firsthand.

I Say Something About Her Every Time I Speak | Nora Gast

Nora Gast creates a moment of reflection amid great change in her experimental glass and mixed-media installation, I Say Something About Her Every Time I Speak. Incorporating nostalgia, memory, and identity in relation to domestic objects, the exhibition investigates the importance of keepsakes, including her father’s socks and her old backyard swing set. She recreates these objects to connect her to younger versions of herself, nested in the present. Gast states, “In times of uncertainty, objects around us provide comfort, allow us to access memories, and are a reminder of who we are”.

Description
For over 20 years, the Annual FRESH Juried Exhibition has challenged local artists to push the boundaries of their artmaking through the concepts and materials they use in their artwork. We have revamped the exhibition format: not only will the exhibition feature local emerging artists exclusively, but it will also have a new theme each year that reflects current trends in the art world and our culture.

To achieve this vision, we are seeking an emerging curator who will bring a fresh perspective and bold, contemporary ideas. The selected curator will propose the 2027 exhibition curatorial theme, select artworks for exhibiting, and grant awards. Upon completion of the exhibition and required events, the selected curator will be paid a stipend of $350.

Qualifications:
Demonstrates knowledge of art theory, art history, current art trends, and local art
Demonstrates curatorial interest, practice, or experience
Curatorial practice and experience is five years or less
No formal training or degrees are required
Must be currently based in Summit County or contiguous counties (Cuyahoga, Geauga, Medina, Portage, Stark, or Wayne)
Must be 18 years or older

Important Dates & Timeline:
August 24: Deadline for application
September 1: Notification of acceptance
By September 7: Make final determinations with SA staff about the scope of the curatorial theme in preparation for call opening
November 16–21: Select artworks for exhibition virtually
*December 29 - 30: Select awards & shoot awards announcement video in person, dependent on Akron Recording Company's availability
Thursday, January 14, 5- 8 p.m.: Exhibition opening & in-person awards announcement

Expectations:
Curator must be available for the times outlined above. If timing needs to be adjusted, it should be requested ASAP.

Curator will be available to help discuss, plan, and promote the exhibition with SA staff and agrees to respond to inquiries and needs in a timely manner.
Curator will work collaboratively with the Director of Artist Programs and Exhibitions, Anna E. Young, to determine the vision of the exhibition. Summit Artspace staff reserves the right to make final decisions.
