City of Akron Marks 52nd Season of the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival
July 24 - August 8, 2026, the festival will bring professional dance companies into Akron's public parks
Akron, Ohio, June 8, 2026 — Mayor Malik announced today that the City of Akron will celebrate the 52nd season of the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival, continuing a cherished civic tradition of bringing free, professional dance performances to Akron's public parks. The festival will run for three weeks from July 24 through August 8, 2026, offering residents across the city access to world-class dance performances at no cost. The Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival remains one of Northeast Ohio's most enduring cultural events, reflecting Akron's longstanding commitment to making the arts accessible to all.
“The Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival is one of the City of Akron's greatest traditions,” said Mayor Malik. “I'm proud to support bringing free professional dance performances into our parks because every resident deserves access to the arts, right in their own neighborhood.”
The Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival will spotlight three premiere Ohio dance companies — Ohio Contemporary Ballet, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and Inlet Dance Theatre— bringing professional performance and community engagement to the greater Akron area. The festival opens with a Preview Performance with Ohio Contemporary Ballet at the Akron Art Museum's Bud and Susie Rogers Garden on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.
True to its tradition of bringing dance directly to neighborhoods, the festival will offer a robust schedule of community programming throughout its run. Ohio Contemporary Ballet will present free interactive performance workshops at local community centers including Patterson Park Community Center and Joy Park Community Center. These free workshops are designed for families and will also include the LeBron James Boys and Girls Club at Joy Park Community Center, reflecting the festival's ongoing commitment to accessible arts experiences and professional dance education to youth across the community. Dates/times will be confirmed in the coming weeks so visit the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival website or follow social media for the latest updates and info.
Each Saturday morning of the festival, the community is invited to a free yoga class at the festival stage, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Additionally, each participating company will lead a Saturday morning masterclass at 11:00 a.m. at the University of Akron's Guzzetta Hall. These masterclasses cost $10 and offer intermediate/advanced level students the opportunity to train alongside professional artists.
"Our mission is simple: bring professional dance directly to the people—free of charge, neighborhood by neighborhood. We celebrate both the beloved and the boldly new, and we're proud to be recognized as one of the top four outdoor dance festivals in the nation.” — Jane Startzman, Festival Director, Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival
Supported by the City of Akron, the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival turns local parks into open-air stages where audiences can spread out a blanket, pull up a chair, and enjoy a evening of dance under the summer sky. The University of Akron serves as the festival's residency partner, providing studio space and support for visiting artists and community dancers. Before each performance at 7:45 p.m., the Dance Institute of The University of Akron presents its interactive children's program, giving young audiences a hands-on introduction to dance and a taste of what it feels like to be onstage. The festival was established to honor Heinz Poll, the legendary founding Artistic Director of Ohio Ballet, and continues his commitment to the highest artistic standards. This season, three acclaimed companies — Ohio Contemporary Ballet, Inlet Dance Theatre, and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company — each bring a distinct artistic voice to the stage.
