Bringing stories that make a difference to the page and screen

MEW/EMW believes in character-driven stories. Each week, we will be posting book, film, album, and even artwork recommendations that adhere to this artistic sensibility. We hope you’ll check them out. And even if they are not in line with your personal taste, to each their own.

For our first week, we recommend the following:

BOOK:
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
MEW/EMW believes in character-driven stories. This is not a book about a creature. It is about people in difficult positions beyond their control and poor decisions. It makes you think well over decades since a 19 year-old genius woman wrote it. It also happens to be MEW/EMW's owner and founder's favorite novel of all time!

FILM:
Robert Redford’s Quiz Show
We believe this is the most important popular film of the 1990s, and one that resonates today more than ever. Once again, MEW/EMW believes in character-driven stories. Here we have a young man of accomplishment who truly likes another man of accomplishment but is put into a compromising position with that person he likes and even with his wife. He has to ask, “What am I going to do”?

ALBUM:
The Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge.
The masterpiece is their record Sticky Fingers, but this LP is right up there with their bests. It’s such a wonderful combination of straight-forward Rock songs; however, it also contains others that are a throwback to more classic, softer influences. The album makes us wonder about the passage of time and how we feel about people currently in our lives and others who were once important, in line with MEW/EMW’ character-driven narratives.

Happy explorations!
