On Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, and to honor the sacrifice that makes our freedom possible.

We also remember the many members of the Knights of Columbus who have served with courage and faith, answering the call to defend both God and country. Their legacy lives on in those who continue to serve, protect, and lead with integrity.

If St. Paul says that ‘the love of money is the root of all evil,' then how can we approach wealth as disciples of Jesus?

When a man engages in meaningful labor in the service of the common good of society, his earnings “lead to life.” He is not working for the sake of money, but rather for the betterment of society.

If, on the other hand, one’s acquisition of wealth occurs in a disordered fashion, then the act of acquiring wealth degrades man’s moral character — he has valued money over justice.

So be attentive in how you acquire wealth!

The unbridled pursuit of wealth will not make for a better world, but resources well-spent can do much good to alleviate suffering and foster justice.
