You might ask: why is Bill sitting by these irises all alone? But looks can be deceiving. Bill, one of our sweetest ducks, is in fact guarding one of his lady friends who is laying an egg while hidden in the irises.
Some love for our older ducks! The very dark duck on the right is our beloved hen we named Shade; the first hen to drink from the puddle (the one with the strongest facial markings) we named “Grand Finale” because she was the last to hatch from her group, MUCH later than everyone else! Shade was the second to hatch from the same group 3 years ago.

Family nap time 😴
At three weeks, ducklings are starting to be less dependent on their mother…but they still stick close. And look, they can easily drink from the big-duck water bins they used to get stuck in! 😁

The “super cute” turtle our kids just found 😅
One advantage of Anconas is that they are the best foragers of the middleweight ducks, according to duck expert Dave Holderread. That means they can gather a greater percentage of their food from wild bugs, seeds, leaves, etc. than other ducks their size (or larger). Here you can observe the youngsters voraciously gobbling up some early grass seeds.
Say hi to Bill! He’s enjoying the rainy weather and making himself look nice for the ladies ♥️

The babies are integrating with the rest of the flock really well! Here they are hogging one of the feed troughs (there are others!). Mama Duck is the one that looks almost totally white on the right towards the back.
